CHAPTER THIRTY: WINTER

“Adate?”Iask, my brows pulling together as I stare across the room at Enzo.

He’s standing just inside of my door, his posture tight as he peers over at me. There’s a little black dress in one of his hands and a pair of red heels in the other. If I wasn’t so fucking shocked by the words that just came out of his mouth, I’d find the image amusing.

“Yes,” he nods his head sharply. He moves closer to me, placing the dress on my bed and the shoes beside it.

“With who?” I ask, my brows pulling together. “Is Giovanni planning to whore me out?” The thought is always right at the edge of my mind, because I know that there’s a high possibility of it.

Enzo pinches the bridge of his nose. “You should stop jumping to that conclusion,” he mutters before shaking his head. “No, you’re not going to be whored out.”

“Then who in the hell am I going on a date with?” I shoot back, folding my arms over my chest.

His eyes follow the movement and when his gaze lingers, my chest tightens and my heart skips a beat. Finally, his eyes meet mine. “Giovanni.”

“What?” I ask, confused.

“Giovanni,” he repeats. “That’s who your date is with.”

“You’re fucking kidding me.”

“Watch your mouth,” he snaps, taking a step in my direction. Instinctively, I take a step back and he watches the movement before blowing out another breath. “Just put on the clothes, Winter,” he says and he sounds more than a little exhausted.

A part of me is curious about why he’s so tired, but I tell that part that we don’t care.

He gives me a look before turning and leaving, slamming my door behind him.

I frown at the dress before sighing. I know there’s no way to get out of this, but if I want it to be painless, then I better go ahead and put the fucking dress on.

I undress, tossing my clothes onto the bed before picking up the dress and sliding it on. It’s made of silk and for the most part it’s plain, with a little cut of the neckline that plunges just to the top of my breast. It feels nice against my skin, and it’s long enough that I don’t feel like I’m going to flash someone every time I move.

A knock sounds at the door and I open it up, finding Enzo standing outside, his face grumpy. He looks down at my bare feet. “Why haven’t you put the shoes on?” he questions.

“I was about to,” I tell him, moving back over to slide the shoes on my feet. I stand up, wincing at the pain already moving through my calves. I thought I’d be used to all the fancy heels by now, but no matter how often I wear them, they still absolutely kill my feet and legs.

“Come,” Enzo says, turning around and expecting me to follow.

“I’m not a dog,” I tell him.

He doesn't reply.

We move through the hall and down the stairs. Enzo leads me out of the house and I take in the night sky. All the stars are out and there’s a half moon tonight. A night breeze moves through the air, but it isn’t enough to fight off the humidity.

Enzo opens the back door and I look inside, finding Giovanni sitting on the opposite side with his face in his phone. His dark hair is slicked back and the cuffs on his suit are pushed up to his elbows, exposing his muscular forearms.

“You’re letting the air out,” he says without looking up, “get in.”

I bite back a smart response, sliding inside. Enzo closes the door behind me ,and it isn’t until I look up that I realize Vito is sitting in the seat in front of me.

My brows pull together.

He’s going to go with us on our date?

I thought it was already weird that Giovanni would take me on a date, but it’s even weirder that Vito is going to attend with us.

Is Enzo going to come in too?

It means Maximo is the only one missing and I wouldn’t be surprised if the man appeared out of thin air, it seems to be what he’s best at.
