Ruthless Spring - Page 93

Diamond smirks.

“Is there a reason you seem to have such a fond interest in what belongs to the family, Diamond?’ Maximo asks, stepping forward. His posture is still dangerously relaxed and his tone is bored.

Diamond flicks his gaze to him, taking another drag of the cigarette. He shrugs his shoulders. ‘Probably the same reason that your brother has such a fond interest,” he says, his gaze moving to Giovanni. “Would you like to share with the rest of the class why you suddenly switched to black women,” his eyes flick to me for a moment, “or I guess I should say woman.”

Giovanni doesn’t rise to the bait, only turns on his heels and makes his way to our car. I’m not clueless enough to not know that it’s a blatant sign of disrespect and Diamond definitely appears to be pissed off, as his shoulders bunch.

“You really should remember your place, Diamond,” Vito says, looking at the other man. “You’re not in charge yet and if you keep fucking around, you never will be.”

“A threat, Vito?” Diamond challenges, stepping forward. “And who would you get to take me out? That cousin of Giovanni’s?” He scoffs at the idea. “I’d have a bullet in her head before she even stepped within my vicinity.”

The relaxed posture that Maximo has been sporting all evening is suddenly gone and as he takes a step forward, I know all hell is about to break loose.

I look toward our car but it appears as if Giovanni is already inside, completely done with this entire situation.

He left his volatile brother and hot-headed enemy alone, expecting what?

Vito holds out a hand, placing it on Maximo’s arm and putting a halt to his advance. He looks at Diamond. “We’re done here,” he says sharply. He looks over at Maximo, his jaw tight. “Let’s go.” His voice doesn’t soften exactly but it’s not as hard either, and I decide that Diamond must be the only person that Vito hates more than Maximo.

And I’m even more shocked when Maximo listens, tugging out of Vito’s grasp and heading in the same direction his brother went off to.

Diamond only grins after him, his golds flashing. His gaze wanders back over to me, lazy.

“I said, we’re done,” Vito repeats and he wraps his hand around my wrist. “And Diamond, stay the fuck away from Winter. If I find out about you sneaking into the club to see her again, I‘ll forget that we have alliance with your father,” Vito warns.
