Unbroken 2 - Page 96

I looked at him sceptically. “Impossible.”

He just stared at me. “I didn’t.”

I believed him straightaway. I studied him, furrowing my brows. “You must be dying for it.”

“It wasn’t on my mind. I’ve been busy.” He shrugged. “I run myself down every day. By the time I hit the pillow, I’m out for the night. It’s how I prefer it to be—I can’t go to bed otherwise.”

“You need to run yourself down, you mean?”

He nodded. “Yeah, otherwise I’m pacing. My head’s running like a fucking racetrack.”

I pressed my finger against his mouth. “There it is again! Potty mouth—”

He bit my finger, and I laughed. His expression broke into a grin of his own. I wrapped my arms around him, and he held me for a while as the music carried on.

“How was Hunter?” he whispered sometime later.

I nodded. “He was good to me.”

“The club was good to you, too?”

“Yes.”

“No one gave you a hard time?”

“No one. Well,” I paused, rolling my eyes. “Miles is an asshole.”

He watched me carefully, his lips pressed down. “The Road Captain?”

“Uh-huh.”

“He’s a dick.”

“Isn’t he?”

Leo looked away. “How was Roy?”

“He’s a good president, and an even better partner. He treats Kayla like a queen.”

Now Leo’s brows shot up. “Hunter’s mom showed up at the clubhouse?”

“Oh, God no,” I laughed. “But she’s been staying off and on at Roy’s place. He doesn’t stay at the clubhouse often, and he doesn’t even have some tail on the side. His entire world is Kayla. It’s really cute. Anyway, she’s been slowly getting out of her home.”

“That’s incredible,” Leo said, warmly. “Wow."

“Yeah, he’s so good to her, Leo.”

I wondered if Hunter was going to go to his mom’s now that I wasn’t there. She was his weakness. She would help him if he ever felt low. I hoped so, at least.

Shaking away my thoughts, I said, “Let’s eat, Leo, and keep talking, will you?”

He fed me in his lap, but he didn’t talk much. He claimed there was nothing really to say. Nothing noteworthy happened. His days were the same, and they bled from one day to the next becoming a blur.

“I waited for you,” he said by the end. “That’s all I had to look forward to, Skye. And now you’re here, and I’m…I’m still wondering if this is real.”

I pressed my face into the crook of his neck. “I’m here, and this is real.”

The hug he gave me next was deep. His hands ran over my body as he kissed my head and inhaled my scent. He seemed genuinely starved of me, and I…I was falling into his orbit faster than a comet.
