Unbroken 2 - Page 71

“You wish you were outta here?” he asked now as he watched me closely. “Nugget?”

I sighed. “It’s not that—”

“You wish you were with him?”

I looked up at him with frustration. “I’m here withyou, Hunt. That was the deal—”

“I don’t want to be a fuckingdeal—”

“You know what I meant—”

“Yeah—“

“Now who’s twisting words?”

“Yeah—”

“Ever since I saw him, you’ve been acting fucking crazy!”

His face twisted as he ran a hand through his hair harshly. “I fucking hate it,” he admitted, sounding resigned. “I’m trying, but this doesn’t feel right. It doesn’t feel natural.”

I raised my voice, demanding, “What would you have me do?”

He just stared at me, his face dangerously still. “Don’t ask me that.”

“No, I will ask that.”

“Don’t,Skye—”

“What would you have me do?”

“Choose me!” he shouted suddenly, making me jump. “Fucking choose me!”

My teeth chattered from the cold, from the emotions swirling inside me, from the tears threatening to spill. “I can’t,” I whispered.

“Why?”

“You know why!”

“You love me—”

“I love him, too—”

“You were mine first, Skye!”

“We were kids!”

His face darkened. “I’ve been yours the second you made me that stupid fucking tiara!”

My heart squeezed. “You were a little boy, Hunt! You didn’t even know what being mine meant—”

He slapped a hand against his chest. “I FELT IT, SKYE!”

“Felt what?” I yelled.

“I handed you my heart—I fuckingfeltit leave my chest! Ifeltyou put it in your pocket, and that’s where it’s been all these years!” I promptly brushed the tears from my cheeks, too lost for words as he bore his eyes into me, asking, “Do I have to fucking steal you to convince you we belong together?”

I stared at him in shock. “Don’t you dare say shit like that.”
