“Are you kidding? That’s something I’d wear for work.”
“It suits you.”
“Piss off. I’m not wearing that for a night out.”
He looks through the rest of my clothes while I slip into the bathroom to change into the green dress.
“You don’t want to give off the wrong impression,” he shouts from the bedroom.
I step out of the bathroom, smoothing the dress down over my thighs. “What do you mean?”
He swallows and looks me up and down. “You look like you're desperate. Trying too hard.”
“Don’t be daft. I wore this dress for you before when we worked together, and you liked it.” I spray my best perfume on my pulse points. The fruity scent fills the room.
He huffs. “You were desperate then.”
I slam the bottle down on the dressing table. “How dare you? I don’t remember you complaining.”
“I wasn’t. I just don’t want you throwing yourself at the first guy who shows you any attention.”
“I’ll do whatever I like, and if you don’t like it, piss off back to Australia.”
He bites on the inside of his mouth and picks Caleb up from the bed and walks downstairs just as the doorbell rings. “I’ll get it,” he shouts.
My chest tightens as panic sets in, and I scramble to find my matching shoes and clutch purse.
