Faking It with the Frenemy - Page 88

“She may move out soon. I’m pretty sure this isn’t the type of place she’s used to.” I eye the fancy chair. Yeah, she’s not going to last long in my very ordinary home if she can’t survive even one weekend without something like that. Then I turn my attention back to Wyatt. “By the way… Wyatt?”

“Yeah?”

“We’re, um, you know… Dating for real, right?” It feels important to ensure we’re on the same page. I don’t want any more misunderstandings or assumptions like before.

“Yup.” He searches my face, then smiles. “Don’t know how you can ask that after last night.”

Pleasure and a small bit of embarrassment heat my face. “Sex doesn’t always mean anything.” That’s been my experience, anyway…although maybe I need to revise that slightly. I thought Wyatt betrayed me because of what Geneva did. But if she hadn’t interfered, it wouldn’t have ended the way it did. It’d be small of me to hold what happened against him.

This is a new beginning. The proverbial clean slate. He shared things openly when he didn’t have to, and he deserves for me to treat him the same way.

He holds my hand, then brings it slowly to his lips.

The warm, sweet touch of his mouth on my skin leaves me shivering.

“It does in this case.”

Chapter Thirty-Eight

Wyatt

Kim and I spend the rest of Sunday grocery shopping, then eating in and watching old movies while cuddling. And having sex. Because you can’t have a great day with your girl without sex. Well, you could, I guess. But why?

Princess hops on the bed and deposits a cricket on Kim while we’re wrapped up in each other, breathing hard. Kim gives a high-pitched scream loud enough to pop my eardrum. I glare at the feline, but of course I have to get up and flush the cricket down the toilet and wash my hands. Nothing less will satisfy a woman when it comes to bug disposal.

Princess has the audacity to hiss at me as I come back into the bedroom. Since Geneva only left her with me because Churchill is allergic, I wonder if I can send this demon cat back.

Princess hisses harder, her hair rising.

“Fine, I won’t send you back,” I mutter.

“What?” Kim asks, sheet pulled up to her chin like a shield.

“I said I’m not sending the cat back to Geneva.”

I wait for Kim’s reaction. She mig

ht very well say we need to send her back.

Kim purses her lips. “Of course not. That would be animal abuse.” She sighs. “I don’t know why she keeps bringing me things.”

“Me either. She never brings me anything.” Not that I want her to, but I’d rather have the cat dump bugs on me than Kim.

Monday starts out hectic. Kim has to go back to work, and that means she needs to rush back to her apartment as soon as her eyes open. No breakfast, no coffee together.

“I’ll text you,” she says, then kisses me and leaves.

The bedroom goes quiet. I sigh at the closed door, then heave myself up and get ready for work. Just because I have more money than I can spend doesn’t mean I’m going to slack off on what I do at Sweet Darlings.

The first thing I check when I walk into my office is my email. And I see one from HR with the subject line: Your New Assistant.

Finally!

I open it immediately and skim the attached résumé. Loren Vincetti. Graduated from UCLA with a degree in sociology. She’s only looking for a new position because her boss got relocated to London, and she didn’t want to uproot everything and go with him. According to HR’s note, the previous boss had nothing but praise for Loren.

I hit reply to the message.

When is she coming in for an interview?
