Ours - Page 36

I already have Kam’s attention; he hates me, but as long as he’s drooling over my body, I can work with that. The catch-22 is I don’t want him anywhere near me.

I squeeze my eyes shut and rub my fingers over them, inhaling through my nose and letting it out the same way, trying to get myself in the mind frame to do this.

I can do this.

Are you okay, Alana?I hear Veronica ask.

As good as I can be, I reply.

A knock comes from the other side of the door, and I can hear the hesitancy in it. My heart thrums hard in my chest, and I sit up straight as my eyes shoot over towards the door.

For someone who was so cocky a few days ago, he certainly is timid as hell now.

“What!?” I call out.

“Can I come in?”

“If I say no will you leave me alone?” I shoot back just to annoy him.

He opens the door anyway, and I glare at him from where I sit in the window with one leg stretched out, and the other one bent. His eyes trail down my body, but he quickly looks back at me.

Here we go.

“There’s no point in knocking if you’re going to come the fuck in any way,” I say.

He remains stone-faced as he comes in with the steaming bowl of tomato soup and two fresh grilled cheeses.

“There weren’t any robes in the house,” he replies, ignoring my previous statement as he sets the tray down on the nightstand on the other side of the bed.

I’m not letting him get away with that.

“Bring it to me,” I demand.

Ask him to bring you something to do,Veronica says.

I grit my teeth. Why is she talking?

He hesitates before picking the tray up and carrying it over to me. I keep my eyes directed outside, but I can feel him staring at me as he crosses the room.

I rack my brain for something he could bring me that isn’t food-related. When he’s almost out of the room, I get it.

“If you’re going to keep me locked up, you can at least bring me something to do. It’s boring as shit in here.”

He stops in his tracks when he’s in the doorway and turns around to look at me, but he reaches outside to pull a mop bucket inside.

“What do you want me to bring you?” he asks, his expression skeptical.

“Surprise me,” I tell him boredly.

He stands there for a moment, thinking, then he leaves. For Megan to think Kameron’s so smart, he sure stands around looking dumb a lot.

Just as the door opens, I bite into the grilled cheese in my hand and set my eyes on him with a book in his hand. I dip a corner of my sandwich into the tomato soup and take another bite as he comes up beside me, holding out a copy of Jane fucking Eyre.

“Why would you think it would be okay to bring me this shit to read?”

Kam frowns down at me, disbelief on his face.

“I didn’t think you’d like it, but it’s the only book Megan brought with her and the only thing I could bring you.”
