Master of Kayos - Page 26

Kyllian took the next exit that had a sign for a gas station. The wolves pulled up to the pumps as well, and everyone spilled out of the vehicles.Everyone except Quinn. She was staring out the windshield, and Kyllian followed her gaze.About a hundred yards down the road, several bikes were parked on the shoulder with their riders leaning against the machines.Kyllian’s Gryphon took notice as well.

Looks like trouble.

Sure does.

Wanna cause a little chaos?

No, but it might not hurt to get some answers.

You’re no fun.

I’m all kinds of fun, and you know it.

When the pump clicked off, Kyllian replaced the nozzle and finalized the transaction. He stepped between the pumps where Jeremy was finishing up.“I’m going to pull around to the side of the store and park.See those bikers down there?”Jeremy looked to where Kyllian indicated and nodded.“I’m going to go have a little chat with them.”

“Do you want me to go with you?”

“No.Stay here and watch over Quinn for me.”

“Do you think you should go alone? What if they’re armed?”

“I’ll— shit, it’s too late.”The rumble of motors rent the air as the bikers loaded up and took off in the opposite direction.Using his Eagle’s keen vision, Kyllian studied the last male’s kutte. The one percent patch beside the howling wolf didn’t surprise him.It was the name of the club that did.Wolves of Chaos.Kyllian would have to show them his own brand of Kayos.

“Think they’re from the River Canyon pack?”Jeremy asked.

“Yep,” Kyllian responded.

“Kyllian?”Quinn called out, holding his phone.“It’s Bishop.”Kyllian strode to where she was standing in the open door.“Normally, I wouldn’t answer your phone, but I saw his name on the caller ID.”

Kyllian smiled.“I’m glad you did.”He let his fingers brush hers as he took the phone.“Bishop?”

“Hey, Kayos.I think I have something. It might not be Nikita, but there was a teenager riding in the passenger seat of a blue sedan...”Quinn ran her fingers down his arm and pointed inside while mouthing “bathroom.”Her touch distracted him momentarily.

“I’m sorry, Bishop. Can you repeat that?”Kyllian kept an eye on Quinn until she was safely inside the small store. As the Hound repeated what he’d seen on the CCTV camera, Kyllian kept waiting. When she didn’t come back soon enough to appease his gut, he told Bishop to hang on.“Jeremy.”When the male walked over, Kyllian handed him the phone.“This is Bishop. He has some information on Nikita, but I need to go check on Quinn.”Kyllian took off across the parking lot and pushed open the door to the store. He checked the overhead signs and rushed toward the bathrooms.“Quinn?”he called out when he reached the door to the women’s.When she didn’t respond, he knocked.“Quinn?”he asked loudly.Being a wolf, she would be able to hear him whisper, but he was frantic. With no answer, Kyllian opened the door and peeked in, not caring if anyone else was in there. The restroom was empty, so he retraced his steps to the door and looked out at the vehicles, making sure she hadn’t exited while he was in the back hallway. Not seeing her, Kyllian ran outside.

“Mercy, with me.”When the wolf reached his side, he said, “Quinn’s gone.”

“What?”

“While I was on the phone, she said she was going to the restroom. She’s not in there.”

Kyllian continued jogging around back of the building with the wolf at his side.Several barks sounded in the woods off to the east followed by a howl.Kyllian’s Gryphon tried to break free, but there were too many humans around. He took off running in the direction of the noise with Mercy at his side.Several sets of feet beating pavement sounded behind them, but Kyllian didn’t slow to wait on them.He was already breaking the rules by running faster than humanly possible, but he didn’t care. There was no path through the trees, so Kyllian made one.

Snarls and growls were getting louder as tree branches struck Kyllian as he shoved through the dense foliage.“Quinn?Quinn!”

Someone yelped, and Kyllian prayed it wasn’t his mate.He pushed on as his beast yelled in his head to turn him loose.Kyllian didn’t have time to strip and shift. Why couldn’t Gryphons have the same kind of magic dire wolves did?And why was Quinn in the woods fighting?

When another howl rose, Mercy cursed, then shifted, her clothes shredding. The smaller grey wolf took off, and Kyllian’s Gryphon took control. His clothes fell away as his body morphed into his Eagle. Its sleek body flew through the trees with ease, darting over and around the branches he’d seconds before been fighting in his human body.Scanning the area, Kyllian caught sight of Mercy running toward a larger wolf. No, no, no.She was no match for a dire wolf, but she didn’t slow down. The larger animal turned its head at her approach and bared its teeth.Kyllian dove toward them, screeching. The dire wolf froze at the sound, giving Mercy a temporary reprieve. When he broke through the trees, Kyllian increased his Eagle’s size. That was one bit of magic he did have.

With talons stretched out in front of him, Kyllian aimed for the wolf’s head. Before he could latch on, Mercy lunged, the force of her speed knocking the larger animal to the ground. It was back on its feet quickly, though.Kyllian flapped his wings, changing course in midair, putting his body between the dire wolf and Mercy.Several motorcycles revved their engines, and a vehicle roared to life.Shit, Quinn!Mercy was no match for the other beast, but Quinn was his mate.

When two more wolves broke through the trees, Kyllian prayed to Zeus they, along with Mercy, could handle one dire wolf.He sped toward the sound of the bikes, catching up with them soon after.Stretching out his talons once more, Kyllian grabbed the first rider’s shoulders and flung him sideways. The bike careened, then slid, catching the attention of the next male. With his attention on the wreckage, Kyllian latched onto him, tossing him aside as well. With no rider to control it, that bike teetered back and forth before falling on its side and sliding off the road.By the time Kyllian dispatched all the riders, the SUV had disappeared around a curve.

Kyllian flew hard and fast.He was nearly upon the vehicle when the passenger side window was rolled down and a pistol appeared.A shot rang out, and Kyllian swooped hard to the right.Fuck.He was no match for a bullet.Choosing to live to fight another day, he circled back to where the bikers were stumbling to their feet.Shifting, he landed on two legs, and used his Gryphon voice before any of them could pull a weapon.
