Master of Kayos - Page 25

“Ryker’s not good with you being a Master?”Quinn had met Ryker briefly, and the male had been all business.

“He doesn’t understand it.Ryot says he’ll try to do better with the judgmental bullshit, but that’s to be seen.He probably searched the term Master and saw only the ones who had slaves and assumed that was the type I am.It’s not, and I told him that.Having a slave holds no appeal to me, but I don’t judge those who are into that dynamic. There are so many different kinds even I don’t understand, like puppies and littles, but it’s not for me to understand, just as it isn’t for them to get why I inflict pain. When I’m not in a scene, one of my jobs is to provide security and make sure the club is a safe place for everyone who enters the doors.”

Quinn leaned back, but not before she rubbed her face against Kyllian’s neck and cheek.“Puppies and littles?”

“Yes.Puppies are...”Kyllian looked around.Quinn also felt a shift in the air and turned to find the wolves strolling their way.“Did you find anything?”Kyllian asked Jeremy.Quinn didn’t step away.Instead, she turned sideways, snaking her arm around Kyllian’s waist. He already admitted he wanted her as his mate, so she took advantage of that knowledge.Seeking comfort was something mates did, right?

“We tracked her scent about half a mile past the bus station down the sidewalk. She entered a diner, and when we showed her photo, the waitress behind the counter remembered Nikita.Said she ordered a soda and kept her nose glued to her phone while she sipped it.After about thirty minutes, she went toward the bathroom, but the waitress didn’t remember seeing her come out.She thought she just missed her when a large group came in.We circled the building, and Nikita had exited through a back door. Her scent led us about six blocks before it disappeared.”

Mercy bounced on the balls of her feet.“We figure she got into a car because we scoured the area and nothing.”

“Shit,” Quinn muttered.“She’s just a kid.”

Kyllian released Quinn’s waist and turned, tipping her chin up with a knuckle.“Yeah, but she’s strong.Unless she got into a car with another shifter, she can take care of herself.”Kyllian pulled out his phone and showed Quinn as he texted Bishop with the information, asking the male to tap into any CCTV cameras in the area.It was a long shot but worth it to try. When he put his phone away, Kyllian told the group what he’d requested.“It’s late.Unless you want to keep going, I suggest we all get some shuteye.”

“No.”Quinn gripped his arms.“We need to keep going.”

Kyllian searched her eyes, so she made sure he could read the determination there. He dipped his chin, then turned to Mercy and the other wolves.“If you guys need to rest, go ahead. You can catch up with us afterward.”

Mercy shook her head.“No way. We’re going with you.”

“Okay. Then let’s head toward the RC pack.If Bishop happens to catch sight of Nikita, we can always double back if we’re going the wrong way.”

When they piledinto their vehicles, Mercy rejoined Kyllian and Quinn.“I hope you don’t mind, but there’s more room in here.”The female stretched her legs across the seat with her back to the door and closed her eyes.So much for not needing rest, and there wasn’t any less room in the other two cars.Something felt off about the she-wolf, but until she gave him a reason to distrust her, Kyllian would keep an open mind.Quinn leaned her head back but turned it so she was facing Kyllian. She, too, closed her eyes after giving Kyllian a smile, and he was left alone with his thoughts. He put his phone on vibrate in case Bishop called. The females obviously needed downtime but were too stubborn to say so.It was a good thing he was a Gryphon and didn’t require as much sleep as humans.Or wolves.

Kyllian had been driving a couple hours when his phone vibrated, only it wasn’t Bishop.Instead of using the Bluetooth, he put the phone to his ear.“Devil, talk to me.”Kyllian kept his voice low, knowing his nephew would hear him.

“No sign of Nikita, but we’re definitely in wolf country. If we weren’t Gryphons, we would have never seen them prowling the area. There’s fur everywhere.”

“Any trouble?”

“None so far, but I have a feeling that won’t last long. Not only are there wolves patrolling, but there are bikers out even this late. They fell in behind us, keeping their distance.Since we don’t know exactly where the pack lives, we continued on about forty miles. That must have satisfied the other bikers, because once we passed the county line, they turned back.”

“Shit.I should have had Quinn tell you exactly where the pack is located.Once she wakes up, I’ll have her call you.We talked to the ticketing agent at the bus terminal.Nikita did come through the building, but she didn’t get on another bus.The wolves lost her scent a few blocks from a diner. We assume she got into a vehicle, so I called Bishop and asked him to check CCTV cameras.”

“It would be helpful if he can see what kind of car she got into, because there are no cameras out this way.The area we passed through where we encountered those bikers is nothing but nature. At least not that we saw.”

“I was afraid of that.Hang tight where you are, and if I hear from Bishop, I’ll let you know.”

“You got it.”

As Kyllian disconnected, Quinn raised her head and leaned forward, stretching.“What’s the plan?”

“If we don’t hear from Bishop, I think we need to split up and cover all the roads heading toward the pack. Not that we’ll know what kind of car Nikita is in, but maybe we’ll get lucky and recognize her.”

Quinn reached over and placed her hand on Kyllian’s nape, playing with his hair.“And do what?We can’t sabotage the driver.”

Mercy roused in the back seat.“No, but if we do see her, Jeremy or I can flag her down.”

Quinn turned in her seat, keeping her hand on his neck.“Nikita’s on the run for a reason.Do you think she’ll stop for you?Or will she panic?”

“Only one way to find out,” Mercy said tartly.Kyllian narrowed his eyes at her image in the rearview mirror.Ignoring his anger, she asked, “Where are we anyway?”

Kyllian shot a glance at the GPS.“About thirty miles from San Rito.”

Quinn removed her hand from his hair, then leaned closer and glanced at the dash.“You might want to stop for gas soon.We don’t want to run out once we get onto the back roads.”Instead of moving back to her side of the car, she remained stretched across the console.Kyllian didn’t know if she was changing her tune about them being mates or if she just needed to be near.Whatever the reason, he liked having her close to him.
