“No,” Nathan said as he pocketed the keys, “she’s not.”

“What did you do to him?” Samantha asked, worrying her hands together as she watched the shifter place his hand over his stomach with a groan.

“Used the fact that he hasn’t shifted in over five hundred years against him,” Nathan said, giving the shifter a patronizing pat on the head that had the shifter’s eyes turning silver and-

“Is he dead?” she asked, moving to go check on Kale only to have Nathan take her hand in his and head towards the front door.

“No, he’s enjoying the aftereffects of eating pizza sprinkled with ground-up poppy seeds,” Nathan said with a satisfied sigh before absently adding, “It makes shifters sick.”

“Oh, my god,” she mumbled as she glanced back towards the stairs. “You made Trace sick on purpose.”

“Really didn’t have a choice,” Nathan said, moving to head out the door only to have her pull her hand free and step back.

“What the hell’s going on?” Samantha demanded, taking a step back when he went to grab her hand again.

“I’ll tell you in the car, but for right now, we really need to get the hell out of here.”

“What are you talking about?” Samantha asked, trying to make sense of what was happening.

“They’re coming, Sam. That’s the only reason why you’re still here. He wants them to come and he doesn’t fucking care if you get in the way,” Nathan said, gesturing for her to come with him.

“Then we need to get him out of here, Nathan,” Samantha said, turning around to go get Trace so that she could get him out of here.

“We don’t have time for this. They’re coming, Sammie,” he said as he reached over and grabbed her before she could move away from him.

“I’m not leaving him,” she said, trying to break free, but Nathan simply ignored her as he threw her over his shoulder, headed for the front door, and-

“I really wouldn’t do that if I were you,” came the softly spoken words that had Nathan dropping her on her feet and shoving her back just as several large beasts that left no doubt in her mind that they were werewolves stepped onto the porch as a small woman with hair that looked like it had been spun from gold, pale skin, and the bluest and cruelest eyes that Samantha had ever seen pointed at her with, “That one.”

Before Samantha could struggle to take her next breath, one of the werewolves grabbed hold of Nathan only to have him backhand the beast and send it flying as another beast dropped down on all fours, leaned over and-

Tore a scream from her as it sank its teeth into her thigh, leaving her with no other choice but to pass out from the pain.

Chapter 41

“You fucking bitch,” Ethan managed to get out as he was slammed against the cell wall as two fucking mutts forced him to the cold metal floor so that they could chain him to the wall as he glared at the bitch that he was going to fucking kill.

“Kind of ironic, don’t you think?” Mary asked, gesturing around them as she took in the cells that he’d had built for her.

“I’m going to make you fucking pay,” Ethan said, watching as the woman that had played them so fucking well ran one well-manicured hand over the expensive silk blouse that she’d been forced to change into after the Sentinel’s blood had ruined the last one.

“I think you have other things to worry about right now, don’t you?” she asked with a pointed look at the cell next to them, the one that he hadn’t been able to force himself to look at.

“More blood,” Mary said, stepping out of the way as the mutts that she’d hired to guard him for the past few weeks finished securing him to the wall and headed for the cell door as his attention was drawn to the cell next to him.

Oh, god…

He watched as the Ramjis demons that she’d hired double-checked the chains while several of her Packmates forced blood down his son’s throat while Trace laid there…

He’d been so fucking foolish, Ethan thought, watching as the small woman that they’d used to lure his son out of the house so that they could shoot him, was carried into the basement. When the demon went to place her in the cell with the Sentinel, Mary shook her head and gestured towards his son’s cell with, “Put her in there. Make sure to keep her out of his reach so that I can see what we’re dealing with here.”

With a nod, the demon carried the unconscious woman that had the Sentinel losing his fucking mind into his son’s cell and placed her on the floor, not bothering with the chains since she wasn’t going anywhere. Not with that leg wound, Ethan thought as he ran his gaze over the small woman, noting how pale she was before his gaze landed on the leg wound that someone had wrapped in a half-assed bandage.

God, he was a fucking idiot.

For years, he’d been so wrapped up in his plans that he’d never realized that the bitch had been making plans of her own. Everything had been so well-orchestrated, absolutely fucking everything, from the way they’d used Ramjis demons to follow them, knowing that they wouldn’t be able to scent the demons or hear their heartbeats to the way they’d grabbed them. There had been no rush or missteps. They’d simply executed a well-thought-out plan that he’d blindly walked into.

He’d been too fucking cocky and now they were all paying for it, Ethan thought while he watched as they dragged Jacob into the Sentinel’s cell and chained him to the wall next to Kale, who looked absolutely fucking furious. Not that he could blame him, Ethan thought as he watched the shifter try to remain conscious, but the diluted silver nitrate that they’d injected him with was slowly tearing him apart. It wouldn’t kill him. They’d made sure of that, but Ethan had a feeling that the shifter wished it would.
