A Monster's Beauty (In the Arms of Monsters 3) - Page 58

He took her hands in his. “I know I’m probably not the right guy for the job. I fuck up more times than I can count, and I mess up everything. I love you. I want to be with you, and Bethany will be my daughter.”

Tears filled her eyes. How could she not love this man? He was everything. Sweet, charming, loving, everything a woman could ask for.

“I’m pregnant,” she said, letting the words slip out.

Chapter Nine

“We’ve been here before,” Randall said.

“We have.” Robin sat on the table after the examination and blood was taken. “Am I healthy?”

“You are healthy. I do want to keep a close eye on you, just in case,” he said. “You’ve been through a lot and I know Preacher will want to make sure you stay fit and healthy.”

“Right.” She stared down at the gown she’d been asked to put on. Preacher was outside waiting with Bethany. He hadn’t come in this time. Why hadn’t he come in? He’d taken the news of her pregnancy rather well. He’d been excited, lifting her up in his arms, kissing her and her stomach. Since he dropped her off at Anne’s, though, on the very same day she’d told him a week ago, he’d been distant. This was the first time she’d seen him and that was to bring her to an appointment.

“You’re not happy?” Randall asked.

“My emotions. I’m fine. Honestly. Just little things, they seem to be getting to me in ways I didn’t realize they could. I’ll be fine. I promise. It will all be good.” She didn’t know how long she could keep up the pretense. Even smiling was hurting her cheeks. The tears were constantly blurring her vision. “Actually, there is something I wanted to talk to you about. When I first arrived at the hospital. Something had happened to me and I was wondering if you tested me…” She stopped. It was so freaking hard for her to think or to feel right now.

“We took all the necessary bloodwork. You came back in the clear and healthy, Robin. You’ve got nothing to worry about.”

She breathed out a sigh of relief. “That’s good, right? It means this baby will be fine. No problems.”

“You know I can’t guarantee anything for you. Babies, pregnancies, they all come with risks and problems. Some can be a breeze, like your first one. Then circumstances happen, and it all changes. I can’t guarantee anything here, Robin. We can take it one day at a time and hope we catch anything of any concern.”

“Right.” She pressed her lips together.

“Then why do you look like you’re going to throw up? You haven’t experienced any morning sickness as yet, and you’re doing fine. No problems.”

“I’m fine.”

“But?”

She stared at him, wondering what she should say to him. It was … impossible to not open up to him. “I don’t think Preacher’s happy.” She whispered the words, not wanting to hear her fears.

Randall smiled. “That’s not possible.”

“He’s not in here.”

“He’s taking care of Bethany, and on this first visit, I need to concentrate. Don’t get me wrong, your little girl is a dream, but some kids can get restless and I need to be focused on you. Preacher knows that. He knows how important it is to take care of you. I promise you, he won’t let anything happen to you. Not on his watch. Not on anyone’s watch. You are the love of his life and I’ve known him a long time. It’s a little shocking to even be saying those words.”

“Love of his life?”

“In all the years I’ve known him, and I was there for your and Bishop’s births. I held you both as newborn babies. Admittedly, I wasn’t that much older than you.”

She laughed because she knew he had to be because with him being a doctor, he’d completed far more training at her age. “I’ve never seen that man broken until the day you were gone. I know he nearly tore his club apart. He sacrificed a great deal to find you. He never did and each time it was a fail, he became more and more shattered. There was no way of consoling him. He loves you more than anything in the world and I truly believe if you were to say the club or you, he would pick you.”

“Wow.” She let the tears she’d been trying to keep at bay fall.

“Yeah, wow. I love my wife and kids, but I don’t think I’ve ever experienced what you two do. The moment I called him, he was here to see you, Robin. The relief, even with your memory gone, he was just happy to have you back. There’s more to Preacher than either of us will ever know, but his love for you, it will never be in question.”

“Thank you.”

“I’m going to let you get changed now. I’ve taken up enough of your time. Go and have some fun. You’re going to need it.” He left the room and as he did, she felt a little lighter, a little happier.

This hadn’t sucked big time. There was a chance for her and for Preacher. She just had to stop letting her nerves and past experiences get in the way.

After changing into her clothes, she met Randall outside where he gave her a small birthing package that he’d given her with the first pregnancy. Leaflets, helplines, information, that kind of thing.
