Wait For Me - Page 81

“I wanna pway too.” Emma hops off the couch and runs for the kitchen.

“Don’t forget your shoes.”

“I won’t!”

Grayson motions toward the kitchen, and I follow him in there. I stand beside the counter where I have a clear view of the kids while he finishes his drink and puts the cup in the sink.

“Good morning.” He steps behind me, presses his palms flat against the counter, and kisses the side of my neck.

I put my cup down, turn in his arms, and touch the front of his shirt. “The best morning I’ve had in a long time. I’m sorry I fell asleep last night.”

“Don’t be. You were tired, and it was late. But I am hoping I can get a do-over tonight.”

“Oh yeah? What did you have in mind?”

“I would like to take you out on a date.”

“What about the kids?”

“Jessa offered to watch them.”

“What? When?”

“Last night when I left the bar. She said something about owing you a big apology and feeling horrible. And then your brother threatened me within an inch of my life if I hurt you.”

“He did not.” I gasp.

“I assure you, he did. But I promised I wouldn’t. He’s still not happy with me because I told him we were just friends, but in my defense, at the time, we were just friends.”

“And it’s really none of his business.”

Grayson looks over my shoulder to check on the kids playing outside before bringing his mouth to mine.

“Where are we going tonight?” I ask, giddy at the thought of going on a date. “I’ve never been on an official first date.”

“It’s a surprise.”

My lips part. “Well, how am I supposed to know what to wear if I don’t know where we’re going?”

“I’m sure whatever you wear will be beautiful and perfect.”

“Then I better call Jessa and see if she wants to go shopping today.” I push onto my toes and kiss him again. And then again and then deeper the third time because I can.

“I know what you’re going to say,” I tell her, sliding into the front seat.

I shut the door, and Jessa puts the car in drive.

“Hello?” She smiles cheekily. “What? That’s what I was going to say.”

“You and I both know you had something else on the tip of your tongue, especially after last night.”

“You’re right.” She steals a glance at me as we weave through town. “I was going to tell you I’m sorry.”

Okay. I wasn’t expecting that. “For what?”

“For warning you away from Gray, for starters. That was wrong of me.”

“Why the change of heart?”
