Rocky Waters (Lovers Lake) - Page 18

“You wouldn’t,” she gasps.

“Well, he does seem to be the only one to shut that mouth of yours,” Darcy adds from the front seat.

“This is the last time I come to rescue you.” She crosses her arms and huffs. The sheriff’s got his hands full.

“Dude, stop laying it on so thick this isn’t pizza. Keep those cheesy bits to yourself,” Georgie tells Sean. I missed whatever he said to her, but from the look on his face it wasn’t just a line to him. He’s got it bad for her.

We drive up, mostly in silence while Sean texts away. As soon as we get out of the truck, he says, “Bennett, I’m out of here. I’m gonna stay at the hotel tonight and then fly back to Texas as soon as I get the all-clear from the lawyer in the morning.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yep. I know when I’m not wanted. Take it easy. Are you still coming back on schedule?”

“Yes. I still have a small ranch to run,” I remind him.

“Okay. Bye ladies, I’m assuming I’ll be seeing you soon, Darcy.”

“See ya, Sean.” I look at Georgie and she knows she fucked up. I’m not gonna say shit because that’s not my business, but as I pass her up, I do add, “He’s a good guy, ya know.” I walk into the house and pull Darcy in for a hug. “Did you have a nice night?”

“Yes. Thank you for our first real date.”

“You’re welcome, but it was really all my pleasure.”

“So…I’ve been meaning to ask. Do I get to read your new book before it releases?” Sean mentioned it over dinner, but I stopped all talk of it because I hate talking about myself.

“Oh I see. You’re only sleeping with me to get to the goods, lady.” I pretend to be indignant, shaking my head and scowling at my woman.

“I just consider it a perk.”

“Fine. I suppose, but you have to wait until they leave.”

“Wait…it’s done already?” Her eyes shoot wide open, and she lets out a gasp.

“Yes. Something about coming here made it fall straight onto the keyboard. I wrote it in record time and I’m sure it’s gonna need a ton of edits and revisions, but I think it’s my best book yet.”

“Maybe it’s because you knew I was coming, and you would be completely distracted by my pussy that you couldn’t concentrate,” she says, sassily arching her brow and jutting her hip out with her hand resting on it.

“Shit, well then, I’m never releasing another book.”

Her mouth falls open and she pokes a finger into my chest. “You watch your mouth. Don’t go saying blasphemous things like that.” Damn she’s so damn adorable. I’ll have to write a book especially for her every year. It might be all I have time for.

Chapter Seven

Darcy

Two weeks later…

I can’t believe I’ve just moved down to Texas with Bennett. It’s been the most insane, passionate two weeks of my life. He’s been my crush for so long it’s nuts that he would feel the same about me.

My sisters didn’t give me a hard time because they have their own men who are practically beating down their doors, demanding a happily ever after. I’m not getting into their business as long as they’re happy. I’m just trying to navigate this whole thing between Bennett and me. He’s intelligent and handsome, crazy about me and he has the cutest dog.

“Come here, Beast.” The border collie comes running to my side. “Let’s go for a walk while your daddy is working.” He owns a small cattle ranch that he spends most of the year running with staff. He likes to have hands on everything and that’s how he keeps that sexy physique of his.

We come to a halt at the stables when I see Bennett talking to a woman in a pair of tight jeans and even tighter top. Her long, red hair is about to get ripped out if I don’t get a good handle on my emotions.

I’m getting heated until Bennett spots Beast and me. He wags his finger, summoning me and the second I’m in grabbing distance he pulls me to his side.

“Darcy, sweetheart. I want you to meet our vet, Dr. Mary.” I finally see the face of the woman and although she’s beautiful, she’s at least in her fifties, so I lower my hackles a bit. Not entirely of course because any female around Bennett makes me jealous.

“This is the girl I saw in the papers. You’re more beautiful in person,” she says with a very warm and genuine smile.

“Thank you,” I say, feeling like a bitch because she’s being so nice.

“It’s great to finally see Bennett with a girl. So don’t let him get out of marrying you now.”

“No…it’s not like we’re…”

“She’s not going anywhere. I learned to rope some cattle, I’ll sure as hell make sure I keep Darcy tied to me.” He bends down and kisses my lips. “Forever.” He kisses me again and I melt into him, feeling his length thickening against my belly.
