Killing Them Softly - Page 35

"You don’t have to worry about that. She don’t want none of this," I’d tell her.

"I know, but in case she comes to her senses one night, there won’t be any left. This is my dick."

Each night we’d meet after work for dinner. One night, while we waited for our table, Avonte and I had drinks at the bar. We didn’t even get seated at a table before we were out of there. Over drinks, we agreed that the only thing either of us was hungry for was each other. We went to the closest bed we could find, and fucked each other silly.

It was after 11 when I got home, and Taye was asleep, just as she was every night. I could set my clock by it. Every night at eight-thirty, Taye took her sleeping pills. By nine o’clock, she would be out like a light. That’s how it began. Every night, I would come home and wait for Taye to pass out at nine. Then, I would leave the house and go be with Avonte, who’d be waiting at some motel near my house. We did our thing, and I’d be back in bed when Taye woke up.

As things between me and Taye got worse, I would come home less and less. Avonte and I would get together for dinner after I got off work. Someplace small and out of the way, where I was sure that I wouldn’t be recognized. Some nights we’d hang out, take in a movie or a Broadway show, and other nights, it was straight to the hotel. It got to the point where I had spent so much on hotel rooms, that it was cheaper to rent a furnished studio apartment. I found a spot not too far from my job. When I got off work, Avonte would be there with dinner waiting. After dinner, we headed to the bedroom for the best sex I’d ever had. Then, about two or three in the morning, usually three, I’d leave Avonte and go home, so I could wake up next to Taye.

Avonte didn’t like to talk about what was going on with her marriage, so I didn’t ask. I didn’t know how her husband let her be gone every night, all night, but I’m not complaining. Sometimes I wondered if Avonte was married at all, but here again, I ain’t complaining.

It was Friday night, and I had gotten to the apartment a little earlier than I usually did. I found Avonte in the bed, curled up with her laptop, surfing the web. "Hi," she said when I came in the room.

"Hi, yourself," I said, and took off my jacket.

"I didn’t feel like cooking tonight," Avonte said. "So, you’re having me for dinner." She pulled back the covers. I loosened my tie and joined her in bed. You know what happened then. While we made love, I thought about what I was doing there. There I was, a married man, and I practically lived with Avonte. Avonte shook her hips and grabbed her breasts. "I can feel you getting harder inside me. Give me that juice, baby. I want it all."

My eyes and mouth opened wide, and my body became rigid. Avonte smiled then began pounding her body into mine, and rocking her hips furiously until she had taken it all from me. Avonte rolled off of me and lay flat on her back, out of breath, but smiling.

The two of us laid there for I don’t know how long, in each other’s arms, enjoying the quiet bliss after great sex. Avonte inched a little closer and kissed my chest. "You make me feel so good. Every time we do it, you take me to a new level."

"It is great. You make me feel good, too, Avonte."

"Let’s do something tonight," Avonte said.

"Like what?"

"Since we got this place, we hardly do anything," she paused, while I gave her a funny look, and then she continued, "other than fuck, I mean."

"What did you have in mind?"

"I don’t know. What do you wanna do?"

I’ve always hated that. Why do women do that? They wanna go out, but when you ask them where, they never have a clue. I decided to turn the tables on her. I sat up in bed and looked at Avonte. "I don’t know. What do you wanna do?"

Avonte laughed. "I tell you what."

"What?" I said, and kissed her. I couldn’t get enough of her.

"Why don’t we take a shower and get dressed. We’ll figure it out from there."

"I’m hungry, are you?"

"Of course," Avonte said, and rolled out of bed.

"So, we know eating is involved in this plan. Maybe if you put on something real sexy, I might take you dancing."

"Really? We haven’t been dancing since San Juan. Sounds like a plan is coming together."

Once we were dressed, we had dinner at Bocca’s on East 19th Street. It’s a Roman restaurant that we’d been promising to try. And I have to say that in a city like New York where you can find Italian food on just about every corner, the

Roman cuisine was outstanding.

Since Avonte wore something sexy as I requested, after dinner, we went dancing. We had been on the dance floor from the time we hit the door. Both of us loved dancing, and we had so much fun dirty dancing the night away. When Avonte said that she was tired, we left the floor. "I’m gonna get a drink."

"I’m going to the men’s room. Why don’t you order me a drink, and I’ll meet you at the bar."

While I was in there, I took out my cell phone, and just as I did every night, I blocked my number and called my house to see if Taye would answer. She never did. Sometimes I wished she would answer when I called. That would mean she didn’t take her sleeping pills, which could’ve been an indication she was getting better.
