Nathan’s always surprising me, and it’s always something sweet. Something romantic. Something we can both enjoy.
“I should finish some proofreading when we get back,” I try to bluff him. Seeing if he has a tell-tale look, but he only nods and smiles knowingly.
“Great to have your second book coming out,” he observes, pretending to stare out the window but I can see he’s having trouble containing himself after another mile or so.
“Alright,” I finally yield, throwing my hands up when we stop at the next set of lights. “What is it? I know you’re up to something, Nathan Cartwright,” I challenge him, trying to stay serious myself, but reading his knowing look, I can tell he knows.
Like he did the last time.
“You never were good at knowing, or keeping a secret, were you?” he asks, sounding like the good doctor herself before he leans over and kisses me after checking there’s nobody behind us.
Once the light turns green I pull over at the nearest place I can, demanding to know what he’s talking about but somehow sensing I know exactly why he’s so smug.
“Do you really want to keep me barefoot and pregnant, writing books in between pumping out milk?” I ask him, pretending to be annoyed as my hand strays to my belly.
Both our eyes shining with delight as they shift to our two sleeping treasures in the back.
“Am I really such a bad stay at home dad?” he counters, faking shock.
“I just thought after two, I’d be the first to know for a change,” I smile, reaching for his hand and sighing once I feel it over mine, tracing the shape of the new life I now know is inside me.
“Maybe you’ll pick it up after third. Or maybe fourth?” he asks, winking at me before telling me the one thing we will never get tired of telling each other every day. Through good times like this and the not so good times, it’s our catchphrase that never gets old.
“I love you, Lucy. No matter what.”
“And I love you, Nathan, because I can’t love anything else the same, not ever.”
