Rapture (Renegades 7) - Page 81

“Yeah, I think I might.”

When he looked into her eyes, his were dancing. “We took a long freakin’ winding road to get here.”

“But we’re here.” She gestured toward the crib. “And you’re just in time.”

Chase laughed. “What do you say we put a hold on that?”

She slid one leg over his and her arms around his neck. “Why?”

Chase groaned and stroked his hands from hips to shoulders and back. “I wish it was for what you’re thinking. But I’ve got a Realtor waiting to show us houses.”

“Us?”

“Yeah, us. I know it will be a sacrifice to move away from this mansion on the beach, but I’d really like to be under the same roof every night with my two best girls.” He kissed her. “What do you say?”

She tipped her head. “Are you sure you don’t want to ease into this a little slower?”

“Hell, no. I’ve never wanted anything so much in my life.” He trailed the tip of his nose down hers. “Well, except to get the house-hunting over with so we can get back here and pick up where we left off.”

She kissed him, long and slow and deep. “It’s a deal.”

Epilogue

Six months later

Zahara winced and pressed against her belly just below her ribs, counterpressure to the pain. It had taken months of planning to force the stars to align so that ever

yone who mattered was at this baby shower.

One more snafu and they would be having this shower at the hospital. Zahara was due in three days.

The entire Renegades family had come to the team’s hub, Jax and Lexi’s home on Malibu Beach—Rubi and Wes, Josh and Grace, Troy and Ellie, Keaton, Brooke and Connor and, of course, Lexi and Jax. Ryker and Rachel had even flown in from Virginia. Duke, a former Renegade turned actor, and the newest Renegade, Cameron, had also twisted their schedules to hell and back to be here.

As if that wasn’t a gang worthy of a boisterous event, Chase’s entire family had come, along with a shit-ton of friends and extended family.

Chase gave her free hand a squeeze and leaned close. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Fine.”

“Liar.”

“Just for that, you can open the rest of the presents.”

They’d taken a break to freshen drinks, and Chase glanced at the table still holding a mound of beautifully wrapped baby gifts. An ominous sound rolled in his throat. “Who knew a human being the size of a watermelon needed so much stuff?”

Zahara laughed. “This little girl has definitely taken over our closet space.”

“And she’s not even here yet.”

Lexi had gone all out for this baby shower. Fairy lights drenched the patio. A buffet-style feast and a bar were manned by catering staff. Tables were draped in pink linen. There had to be hundreds of flowers decorating every horizontal surface, all pink and white.

The setting and the company had been tailor-made for a blissful evening. But a whisper of anxiety had haunted her all day.

The baby moved. One of those full-body stretches that distorted her belly and twisted painful pressure through her stomach. Immediately followed by a tight, cramping sensation so intense, it stole her breath.

Luckily, Chase was looking at the kids of friends playing in the pool.

Zahara had experienced what the doctors called Braxton Hicks contractions for the last two months, so she wasn’t quite ready to jump to the conclusion she was in labor. But she couldn’t deny the regularity or the intensity of these much longer.
