A Brush With The Devil - Page 28

Even with as close as he was to getting the life choked out of him, he still wants to be in charge of things.

Whatever.

I rub my eyes with the back of my hand and stifle a yawn as I turn the van up toward the highway entrance.

"What did you guys do?" I ask him in a quiet voice.

"Nothing," he replies before he raises the bottle to his lips and takes a swig. "Just hung out."

Right.

I roll my eyes and shake my head. There's no such thing as "just hung out" when it comes to Lakyn Meyer, but I'll let him tell me when he wants to. Right now, he seems a bit shaken and I don't want to poke him anymore than he'll be able to stand.

"What were you doing while I was gone?" he asks as he twists the bottle back onto the cap.

"Sleeping."

Lakyn chuckles and I steal a glance at him. He runs his hands back through his hair, leans his chair back, and lets out his breath in a rush. "You're gonna drop off Beatrix, right? I don't think I could take dealing with another asshole for the next few days."

"Yeah."

"Good."

The next hour of driving is silence. I think Lakyn's actually fallen asleep at this point, so I adjust the rear-view mirror and focus on Bea in the back. She's still curled up in a tiny ball, sound asleep, but safe.

That's all that matters to me.

I don't really care what happened tonight, as long as they're both safe.

With another yawn, I rub my eyes when I see the signs for a rest area coming up in the next fifteen miles. I don't know why I'm as tired as I am since I really did sleep the entire time Lakyn was doing God knows what with that broody guy, but I don't think it'll do anyone in this van good if I flip it and kill us.

I open my eyes wide and turn on the air conditioner, blasting the cold air into my face. It'll help me stay awake until we get there.

Once we arrive, I open the door and hop out, stretching my arms high over my head before I gently close it behind me.

I yawn again as I make my way toward the restrooms.

I won't be able to sleep if my bladder is full and neither of them are in any condition to drive. Well, Lakyn might be, but he needs his beauty sleep or he turns into a major drama queen.

When I'm done relieving myself, I head over to the sink and turn the faucets. It takes two shuffles to different sinks before I find one that finally works, and when I'm done and shut the faucets off, I stand up and glance at myself in the mirror.

That's when I almost jump out of my skin.

Lakyn's standing behind me, watching me with tired eyes and that fucking grin on his face.

"How about a little fun before we get back in the van?" he asks, taking a step closer and putting his hands on my hips.

I sigh inwardly as I turn around to face him.

He knows I won't tell him no, but I also feel a little bit better about him being gone for so long.

Because if he wants to fuck right now, that means he didn't do anything with that other guy, and I have nothing to worry about.

It means I can trust him after all.

Doesn't it?
