A Brush With The Devil - Page 27

He nods.

“You’re probably wondering how it is that we’re able to walk and held off that crazy chick. Well, we’ve been, um … we’ve been practicing when you’ve been out. Walking, I mean. We were kind of thinking of a way to escape, but … didn’t have it in our hearts to leave you, after a while, so we just kept moving around as best as we could. What I’m trying to say is that we’ve accepted this, Gray.”

His eyes water, tears spill over and he leans forward to kiss me, but I put a hand against his forehead and stop him.

“Not in front of Aiden,” I tell him slyly.

He sighs and looks away for a moment.

“Gray?” Aiden asks, reaching over to put a hand on his leg. “Gray? I know you can undo this.”

“You’ll die,” he says, a sob escaping his throat. “You’ll both die. I don’t want to be alone.”

“We won’t die. You know damn well that we’re smarter than that. You’re just being selfish about this honey, and that’s not fair. Don’t you want to spend time with Penn again alone?” she asks him.

“Wait a minute, how did I get dragged into this?” I ask, giving her a curious stare.

“Are you telling me that you want to stay like this?” she snaps at me.

I hadn’t thought about that.

“Guess not.” I turn my eyes toward Gray. “Can you do it? Can you separate us?”

He juts his chin stubbornly and turns his face away.

“If you promise to separate us, I’ll tell you what made the little bitch scream and run for cover,” I offer with a grin on my face.

He chuckles and wipes a tear away from his eye with his knuckle.

“Please?” I ask him, reaching over a hand and resting it on the back of his neck. I pull him close and brush my lips against his, “For us, Gray. Please?”

He takes a shuddery breath as he raises his eyes toward mine.

“I’ll try.”

Aiden lets out a whoop, I let out a sigh of relief, and Gray presses his lips against mine, taking away whatever breath I had left.

The story of how we scared Beatrix away can wait for another day.

For now, I don’t want to lose this new promise of a life with Gray.

As two.

Not one.

Epilogue

Ichabod

Beatrix jumped into the back of the van as soon as I unlocked the doors.

Something scared her, but she won't tell us what it was.

Lakyn is in the seat next to me, rubbing his neck, and clearing his throat over and over. I chuckle as I reach toward the passenger side floor of the car and pick up the plastic bag.

"There's water in here," I say, holding out to him.

He grunts as he takes the bag from me and I sigh.
