Chasing You (Love Wanted in Texas 5) - Page 117

“You can stop reading now,” Meagan said.

“Your sense of taste and smell will get sharper, but your feet are also gonna get bigger.” Glancing back at her, I pouted. “Sorry, baby.”

“Gray. Stop.”

“Only five percent of—”

“Grayson!”

Spinning around, I looked at Meagan and boy did she look pissed. “You want me to stop reading?”

Giving me a look like I was stupid, she nodded and said, “Yes. Please!”

I wasn’t sure what to do with my nervous energy. What if something was wrong with the baby? What if when that motherfucker punched Meagan in the stomach, he did damage?

Meagan was now chewing on her thumbnail and swinging her legs harder. Walking up to her, I pulled her hand from her mouth and kissed her lightly on the lips. “It’s all going to be okay, baby. I promise.”

“What if . . . what if when Bob . . .” Her voice cut off as she sucked in a deep breath.

“No. Don’t even think that way. You heard what the doctors said, the baby was very protected and everything seemed to be normal.”

“Seemed to be are the keywords there.”

The knock on the door caused us both to turn and look.

A fairly younger woman walked in holding a laptop.

“Meagan Atwood?”

“Um, yep that’s me.”

She turned and looked at me with a genuine smile. This must be another nurse.

“Mr. Atwood?”

With a nervous chuckle, I said, “No. Mr. Bennett, fiancé.”

With a wink, she nodded and made a note on the laptop.

Looking back up, she glanced between the two of us and smiled bigger. “Let me tell you a little about me before we get started. My name is Hope Johnson. My father retired recently and I’ve taken over his practice. He still does consulting work for the office, but pretty much he spends his days fishing.”

Meagan laughed. “He delivered every one of my best friends pretty much!”

Dr. Johnson smiled. “I hear that a lot. He was an amazing doctor and an even more amazing father.”

“Wait, you’re the doctor?” I asked.

Dr. Johnson smiled. “I sure am.”

“How old are you?” I asked as Meagan pinched my arm.

Dr. Johnson chuckled. “I’m thirty-two. And I have two children of my own. My husband is a chemical engineer and we both met at the University of Texas.”

She lifted her brow as if waiting for me to respond. “Wow. And you’ve done this before?”

“Grayson!” Meagan said.

Laughing, Dr. Johnson said, “Yes, Mr. Bennett. I’ve done this lots of times.”
