“Yes?”

“Come inside.”

The doors to the Gathering Hall swing open, and I step in. The hall is empty, and Ruth motions for me to take a seat in the first row. She goes to the podium at the altar and turns, waving her hand at the doors behind her. They fly open and the entire council comes in, taking seats at the altar.

“What’s going on?” I ask, as a bad feeling tingles down my spine.

Ruth places both hands on the podium and leans forward, eyes meeting mine. “You stand charged with two counts of treason: exposing the door to your Covenstead to a vampire and willingly allowing a vampire to consume sacred witchblood. If found guilty the sentence is death for both you and the vampire. How do you plead?”
