Fall From Grace - Page 29

He says goodbye to his brother then literally stomps over to his car. I follow him and slide into the passenger seat. His face is livid, and I almost thought he was going to drive off without me.

“What the fuck was that?” he asks me as we sit in the lot.

“What was what?” I turn and ask him with a smile on my face.

“Don’t play coy with me, Grace. Why the hell did you say you were my girlfriend?”

I shift in my seat and look at him. “It would have been more suspicious to Herst if he knew I worked for you. Noah may have clearly known what you were trying to do but Herst didn’t. I could tell exactly what you set up with your brother to do today. So I read the room and played the cards the right way. Herst wouldn’t have suspected little ol’ me of anything. I was just curious, like I said.”

“Fine,” he growls. “That was smart but now you need to explain that to my family.”

“Why?”

“Because Noah has probably already told them.”

I snort. “Oh come on. Your brother could tell I was lying about it.”

“How do you know? He would want nothing more than for me to move on and have a girlfriend.”

“Move on from what?” I ask curiously.

But Carson ignores my question. “Maybe that’s why you did. You want to be my girlfriend.”

I roll my eyes at him. “Are we twelve? No, I didn’t do it because I’ve been writing Mrs. Grace Taylor all over my notebooks. Besides, I think that’s your fantasy.”

“Not even close,” he mutters.

“Well you clearly told Noah that we fucked.”

“That’s not exactly what happened.”

“What do you mean ‘not exactly what happened’?”

Carson looks at me and smirks like this is all a game to him as he shifts the car into drive and pulls out of the lot. “It may have been brought up.”

“May have been?” I shriek.

Carson laughs. “Mason has a big mouth.”

“You talked about it at your family dinner?” I feel my face turning red. “Well now I am definitely not showing my face around them ever. I was going to go just to piss you off, but fuck that.”

“Oh come on, it’s not that big of a deal. Besides, there were only a few of us around when it happened.”

“Not that big of a deal?” I yell and hit Carson in the arm, causing him to swerve.

“Watch it.” His voice is stern.

I glare at him. “I thought you only would have kept it between you and me. And Mason since he saw us leave together. But the more people who know means the easier it will be for my brother to know. Don’t you all hang out?”

He nods. “Don’t worry about it, Grace. He’s not going to find out. Besides, it was a one-time thing.”

“Whatever,” I mutter. And then something hits me. “Oh my god. Did you bring me for that reason, to show me off?”

“Why would I do that?”

“How am I supposed to know if you guys share?”

Carson laughs hard, slamming his hand against the wheel. “My brother is happily married and you know why I brought you. Besides, we don’t share.”
