Merciless Hunter (Dark Syndicate 4) - Page 121

That’s more the question and as I imagine it, I’m surprised by the pang of wild jealousy that curls around my throat. The dark thought hits me at the same time his eyes narrow to slits and his lips press into a thin line.

“Now you sound confused and jealous.”

That makes my temper blaze. “I am neither.”

“Keep telling yourself that, angel’skoye lichiko.” Amusement dances in his eyes. “To me, the Dark Odyssey is more than just a sex club. When I do business there it’s because I’m giving you a chance. The club encourages people to show the real them. People wear masks to try and hide it, but really, they couldn’t be more exposed. It’s the ones who don’t wear masks, who truly show themselves. People like you.”

That gives me pause because I don’t know what he means. I didn’t wear my mask because I needed him to see me.

“Me?”

“You looked like you were in need of something.”

I gaze at him and the truth hits me that he’s right. He couldn’t be righter. I needed so much and I still do.

“Come here.” He leans forward and crooks his finger again for me to move closer.

I do and he plants a chaste kiss on my lips.

“Make sure you eat. If I get home and you’re awake, I’ll want you.”

That’s all he says before he walks away, and I stare after him not quite sure what to make of that little conversation that almost seemed normal.

Except it wasn’t.

There’s nothing normal about this situation, or us.

My gaze drifts down to the little old gate beyond the hedge. The one place I’m sure will lead to my freedom.
