Ronan's Bride - Page 9

I laugh lightly. “It’s going to take more than just a night.”

A stern look crosses his face. “Well, not to worry. We’ve got forever. This is your home now.”

I nod, my uneasy gaze locked on his, searching for a hint of his true intentions, his true feelings.

But I don’t see anything. And that scares the hell out of me. Because what is he hiding from me that he thinks will turn our future into a mere blip in our past.

He’s halfway up the huge, dark staircase when I hear him clear his throat and glance up. “Are you ready?”

I nod. “Of course. I’m sorry. I was just lost in thought.”

“About what?”

“Nothing. Just trying to figure out what I need to take care of.”

His looks says it all. He doesn’t believe me. Hell! I don’t believe me. I just can’t deal with anymore tonight.

I need to think. Need to plan.

Need to figure out if all my misgivings are real or imagined. If he’s going to hurt me as much as the last man I let into my life did.

Which is why I’ll be damned if I let him into my heart. That belongs to no one but me.

But I nod my head decisively and climb the dark stairs after him, trying to ignore the warnings clanging in my head.

This is my life and I need to remember I control it.

He opens the door two doors down on the left and smiles. “Here you go. I’ll bring your things right up.”

“Thank you,” I nod coolly and step inside, shutting the door and my worries out.

I’m in control. No matter what the stupid, sentimental side of me says.
