Forgotten First Kiss - Page 46

“You’re the one who helps people in need all the time, Danica. Just let yourself be on the receiving end for once.” He stood to leave. “Give Mark a day to look it over. It’s the weekend. I don’t know his schedule. Then call or shoot me a text, and I’ll let you know what he came back with.”

“You’re not going to call me as soon as an answer comes from him?”

He gave a careless raise of his shoulder. “I would, but I have a lot of work I’m trying to catch up on. I’ve been away from the office for several weeks. But I’ll make time for this.”

Oh. He really was doing me a favor. And I’d taken him away from his job today. Interrupted his day with some kind of imperious summons, expecting him to … what? Fall at my feet? Like he had for ages past?

Not this Jeremy Hotston. Strong of physicality and in his aura. Everything about him exuded not the old Jeremy. With that much confidence, that much swagger, maybe the rumors were true and he really had earned millions of dollars. He sure put off those vibes.

Jeremy left, and I stared after him as he drove away in a very nice truck that looked too high for me to climb into comfortably.

He didn’t even look back or wave goodbye.

My stomach did some kind of round-off back handspring, as if to say, The Jeremy who was here today was a Jeremy Hotston I can easily see why I would have fallen for—anytime. Fugue state or not.

A whole day of waiting for the right time to call him seemed like an eternity.

But it was time to go to Constant Energy for the dress rehearsal for the showcase. Tennille had better be there. And she’d better have some clear answers.
