Perfect Addiction (Perfect 2) - Page 63

And he gestures for his men to retreat. When they’ve finally disappeared from the alley, I let my shoulders slump with relief. I immediately rush over to Kayden.

“Hey,” I say, consumed with worry. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. Don’t worry about it,” Kayden tells me.

“You’re not hurt, though, right?”

“No.” I exhale. I look at Kayden and shake my head in disappointment. “I can’t believe I left you alone for twenty minutes and you’ve already gotten yourself into trouble.”

“Hey, I was minding my own business when they ambushed me,” Kayden says defensively. “I can’t believe you did that. Not that I needed your help, but thanks.”

“You always need my help,” I tease. “Kayden, the damsel in distress.”

He grabs his chest in mock pain as if I shot him. “Please.

My masculinity is already fragile enough as it is.”

Relief floods my core knowing that Kayden left the fight unscathed. I shouldn’t have underestimated Jax in thinking he wouldn’t give us any trouble outside the cage, especially after letting it slip that Kayden and I are working together. It looked like there was a real possibility of Jax beating Kayden up right then and there. The fact that he retreated peacefully is suspicious at best. It’s clear that Jax doesn’t do anything without an ulterior motive.

The game between us has only just begun. And it lookslike we’re both in it for the long haul.

Which means I have to stop getting myself distracted and get focused.

“Let’s go, Killer,” I urge him, a hand extended toward the exit. “Valentine’s Day is over.”
