Perfect Illusion (Perfect 1) - Page 75

“You’re kidding.” He hoots a laugh, covering his face with his hands out of shame for me. “If you like that trashy song, I think I’m entitled to a little Guns N’ Roses.”

“All right. If you insist,” I say, a ridiculous smile forming on my face when I press Play on “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”

And in my most villainous voice, I hiss out “Dance for me, monkey. Dance!”

“I mean, if you say so.”

Kayden does a little awkward body wriggle followed by a moonwalk. Although he’s been getting better at his footwork, I can’t say the same about his own dance moves.

He’s so bad it looks like he’s trying to be bad on purpose, but he’s really just that bad. I try to hold my laugh in but that only lasts for five seconds before a stream of laughter bursts out of me and I’m bending over, my hands clutching my knees.

“Oh God,” I say, grinning as a tear breaks free from my eye. “You’re adorable, Kayden. Like a little puppy.”

“Oof.” He clutches his chest as if he’s in pain. “Way to bruise my ego.”

“It’s a compliment.” I defend myself.

Kayden shakes his head. “A compliment is when you brag about how ripped a guy looks, how he makes you wanna throw yourself at him, how big his dick is—”

“And how can I possibly say that when I’ve never even seen Kayden junior?”

“Kayden Junior? Junior?” He stares at me like I just insulted his entire family lineage with those words alone. “I assure you, Lucky, there’s nothing junior about it.”

I merely smirk. “I guess I’ll never know unless I see it.”

“Maybe you will, maybe you won’t,” he says, his voice low and coarse.

We’re staring at each other now, our bodies so close that I can feel his body heat. Kayden’s gaze dips slightly, landing on my lips, and like a fool, I lick them, tongue stroking my bottom lip slowly. Yeah, I’m totally seducing him backand I’m not even being subtle about it. He sucks in a breath through his teeth. His eyes—now darkened to an almost smoky charcoal color—return to my face, weighted with so much lust that makes my heart feel like it’s about to have an aneurysm. I’m suddenly aware of the swelling of my breasts, the loud thump, thump, thump of my heart and my breath coming out in heavy, unsteady spurts.

Do not purse your lips. I repeat: DO NOT purse yourlips—

It is only the unexpectedly loud crackle of the pan that forces us out of our trance.

“So, um.” I step back, forcing my gaze away from him.

“Food.”

“Right. Food.” He clears his throat and returns his attention to the stove.

We stew in the awkward silence for a good few minutes more until lunch has been cooked, then silence ourselves some more as we sit opposite each other at the dining table and munch away, our eyes never leaving each other. I can’t seem to look at him for longer than a couple of seconds before feeling the sensation of my cheeks turning pink.

What. Is. Happening?!

When we’re both done with lunch and the dishes, Kayden clears his throat and announces, “All right. I’m gonna hop in the shower real quick.”

“Cold?” I blurt before I have the chance to stuff the word back in.

His unflinching gaze snaps to me.

“Hot,” he says, a dangerous glint in his eyes. “Steeping, scorching hot.”

I think my underwear just disintegrated.

“I’m . . . gonna take a nap before our session tonight,” I mutter quickly before hurrying to my room.

When I’ve changed into a more comfortable T-shirt and shorts, I fall into bed and try to get some sleep. It’s been an exhausting first half of the day and I’m dying to squeeze in a bit of rest before a grueling one and a half hours of drills tonight.

Just when I feel like I’m starting to doze off, I hear Kayden step into the bathroom and shut the door behind him. And before he hops into the shower—

He blasts “Shape of You” from his phone.

I turn over in my bed, unable to stop the silly grin blooming on my face.

Fuck me.

I think I’m falling in love with Kayden.

And the worse part is . . .

I don’t want to stop.
