Cherish Me (Rough Edges 3) - Page 44

He agrees and hangs up to call Liam.

There you go. We will be able to help Jason get on his feet. Sometimes, you need to be there for people who need it instead of judging them. I see this all too often.

He is still inside, sitting at the table talking to some guys, when I approach him.

"Jason. My brothers would like to meet you. Are you free?"

"Yes, sir."

He follows me to my truck, and off we go to the duplexes. Jason is playing with his fingers.

"Don't worry. They will like you. So, we were thinking that maybe you would like to stay in one of the duplexes, so you can be close if something needs to be fixed. Is that okay with you?"

His head turns and eyes lock on me. "I don't have money to pay."

"No, the place would be free. You are doing us a favor," I say.

It looks like Damon and Liam have already made it, and are waiting for us as we pull up into the driveway of the vacant duplex.

"Let's go, so you can see your new place."

My brothers introduce themselves, and shake his hand, before we take him inside. You could tell it has been a long time since he has had a proper place of his own.

"All of this is mine?" Jason asks.

"Yes, sir. When can you start?" Damon asks.

"Now!" he yells, and covers his mouth. "Sorry, I'm not sure how to thank you."

"No need to. I'll come back by in a little bit to drop off some groceries, and a phone. We will need to be able to contact you if a tenant calls. See you in a bit," Liam tells him.

We all stop by our cars, and Liam turns to me. "You sure have grown up a lot. Nice of you to help this guy find a job."

I don't respond, but get into my truck and head back home. There is too much to be done right now, and not enough time to get it complete.

After getting back inside, I start cleaning everything, the bathroom, the living room, and bedroom. I take off my shirt, and sweep, mop and vacuum whatever needs it. To be honest, it's probably been months since I vacuumed the carpet in the living room, but I don't spend a lot of my time in there, so that makes sense. I hear my phone going off, and rush to grab it.

"Hello?"

"Just wanted to let you know I made it to Iowa. Thanks again," Elena says.

After she hangs up, someone knocks at my door. Jesus, doesn't everyone know I'm trying to get shit done around here.

"What?" I say, opening the door.

"I told you I wanted to talk. Damon just wanted to join," Aiden says, walking past me into the living room and taking a seat on the couch.

"What is there to talk about? I get you guys are pissed about keeping Jake a secret, but it's not something I wanted everyone to know. You guys already think little of me, didn't want to make it worse."

"Is that what you think?" Damon asks. "Don't be an idiot. Have you done some stupid shit? Yes. Do you still have a lot of growing up to do? Definitely, but we are proud of you, Aid."

"Then why do you guys freak out so bad? Liam practically had a heart attack about my moving away. Ever since Hazel showed up, he's been acting like I'm a seventeen-year-old kid again."

Liam puts his hand up in front of him. "Fault for me looking out for you. I was the one who watched you sit on a damn couch for months after she left you. You have never been the same. Just be smart, damnit. Make sure you are thinking with the right head this go around."

Honestly, I don't really want to hear about what happened in the past, right now, it's time to focus on my future. Whether Hazel and I work out or not, my son lives in Massachusetts and that's where I need to be.
