Admire Me (Rough Edges 2) - Page 76

“Okay, he sent me her number. Might as well call her and schedule an appointment. The earlier, the better. You can be a working woman again.”

She smiles and plants a kiss on my lips. “You really have been great throughout all this. Who knows what would have happened if you didn’t let me stay with you. Or you weren’t there with me in the hospital.”

She seems to need reassurance, and so I give it to her, letting her know Tessa and I aren’t going anywhere. I can imagine with everything she has gone through in the last month, her mind is probably spiraling out of control, trying to find some sort of pattern or routine to hold on to, but there is none. There is only one constant from the moment she woke up, and that’s us.

I hold her hand while she calls and schedules an appointment for the end of this week. It might not be today, but it’s better than having to wait a month or two.

“I’m going with Tessa to do some wedding stuff. She’s on her way.”

I didn’t want to say she’s been waiting for Harper to come around, because then it might make her feel guilty. What are you supposed to do when your maid of honor gets her memory wiped and can’t help you plan your wedding? Tessa has been a trooper through all this, but I know deep down she is scared as hell that their relationship will never get back to normal. “She’ll love that. That wedding is really driving her crazy.”

“I’ve gotta step my game up as her maid of honor. Starting today, I want to work on mending our friendship.”

I love hearing that come out of her mouth, and Tessa will be stoked to get her back. She’s been waiting patiently for Harper to come to terms with everything going on, and reach out to her. I’m glad she finally did.

“Don’t worry, babe. I’ll be back in time to make you dinner,” she laughs, kisses me, and heads out the door.

I pull my phone out to shoot Tessa a text.

Me: Good idea having her tag along and do some wedding stuff. She needs something to keep her busy and occupied.

Tessa: I figured so. Plus who doesn’t love planning a wedding?

Harper has made it abundantly clear that she doesn’t want to be treated like a victim or broken. I try to remember that she woke up not remembering many years of her life, and must feel estranged. Who wouldn’t want to get their life back? Figure out who they are? She’s just doing what she feels is necessary to get back on the path she feels is right.

Me: Friends are exactly what she needs right now.
