Black Arts, White Craft (Black Hat Bureau 2) - Page 77

As good as a hot shower sounded right about now, I couldn’t get my feet on board. “What about you?”

“Clay and I have cleaning to do.” He hit the closet for a broom and dustpan. “Let us handle this.”

“Are you sure…?” I shifted my weight back and forth. “I can stay, help out.”

“You’ve expended enough energy.” He began sweeping. “I’ll be right here if you need me.”

The domesticity of the moment struck a chord with me, and I found my feet glued to the floor.

The broom stilled, and Asa caught me staring. It was like we had swallowed magnets that fought to snap us together whenever we got too close. He might be well versed in his heritage, but I had nothing. There couldn’t be that much daemon blood in me. A quarter daemon wasn’t a lot. Like my arms and one of my legs were pure witch. One piddly leg was daemon. How could one leg’s worth of daemon cause all this?

“Shower.” He pointed the broom at me. “Or I’ll bathe you myself.”

“Shh.”I fanned my cheeks a beat too late to pretend I hadn’t considered letting him. “Colby might hear you.”

He flicked a glance up at the loft, and I had to concede she was too enmeshed in her game to listen in.

“I’ll shower.” I straightened my shoulders. “By myself.”

A teasing light entered his eyes that almost derailed me again.

Fast.

Too fast.

He was speeding toward me, and I was too dumb to step out of the road.

I might as well hold out my arms and make an even bigger target for him to crash into.

Our collision, when it happened, if it happened, would be heard for miles.
