The Alpha Wolf's Enemy (Wolves of Anchorage 2) - Page 40

"She knew that he was murdered by a vampire.”

Roman’s brows drew together. "That doesn't make any sense. How could she know?"

"If she was working with the vampires, then she’d know.”

“Do you really think she's capable of that? What else was going on?” Roman asked.

“Well, Cody called. I knew he was going to give me some bad news, so I asked her to step away. She said okay, and then he told me what happened.”

“So she eavesdropped. Big deal.”

“It wasn’t just that!” Derek yelled. “She just knew. She understood. I don’t know how else to explain it.” He didn’t want to mention the connection they seemed to have.

He hadn't counted on Roman being so skeptical. "Why don't you believe me?"

“It's not that I don't believe you, but this seems like an awfully extreme conclusion to jump to and, well, you’re distraught. You cared about Jesse and considered him a member of our family, not just a pack member, so of course, you're upset.”

“So you think I'm overreacting."

"No, I don't think you're overreacting at all,” Roman said. ‘I just think maybe you're upset right now. I don't want you to make a mistake and accuse your potential mate of conspiring against us when really she's just extra perceptive or maybe a little nosy."

Roman had always seen eye to eye on everything. The two of them had very rarely disagreed. And he didn't want to fight with Roman at all. He just wanted to protect him and the rest of the pack. He didn't have the energy for arguing or for trying to convince Roman that Kyra was up to something odd.

Derek laid his hand on Roman’s forearm. "Listen. I'm saying this not as your best friend. I'm saying this as your second in command.” It was true that Derek was upset, but he was also looking out for this pack. “I have always had the best interest of this pack at heart. Please be careful. If you see Kyra, don't let on to her that I suspect anything. But please be aware. Talk to Jameson and to Tristan. Warn Everleigh however you can. If something happens because I was negligent in letting Kyra through our gates, then I will never forgive myself.”

“You're right. If you're this concerned, then I will take it seriously,” Roman said, clapping Derek in the back. “I'm going to get Jameson and Tristan back in here and we’ll all talk. And I won’t let Everleigh and the kids out of my sight.”

"Thank you. That's what we need right now, some extra caution."

Even though Roman had blown him off at first, at least he had listened a little bit. But he still wasn't taking it seriously enough.

Derek just had an intuitive feeling that the pack was in danger, and he wasn't going to give up.

Just in case, he made a spot by the healers’ cabin. They kept a potion that could temporarily cause excruciating pain for a vampire, just long enough to get away from one of them. Only the Alpha or his second in command would be able to access it.

Luckily, Derek qualified. He stopped by and picked up four vials of the toxic liquid.
