The Emperor (The Tarot Club 2) - Page 67

For a moment, I thought I saw defeat flicker in her gaze before she shut her eyes entirely, her body falling limp in the soldier’s arms.

“You were never supposed to get through her protection.” Even as she spoke the words, I wasn’t certain I was supposed to hear them - they seemed more for herself than anyone of us.

“Please.” That one word sparked an ember of guilt, and I wondered what the Club would have done if it was one of ours.

“Do you think she deserves redemption?” I allowed the question to hang between us.

“She is with child.” Our captive sobbed, and everything within me stilled.

Fuck.

“You wasted your time coming here.” I kept my voice cold, not allowing a sliver of the churning emotion I felt to come through.

This time, I turned my attention to the soldier holding her. “Make sure she gets home.”

He nodded once as I turned back towards the house, Marie and Brenna followed me in silence.

My phone was pressed against my ear before the front door was fully closed behind us. The sound of Dimitri’s car rumbled in the distance.

“I didn’t think that Corinne had it in her, but she proved us wrong.” Brenna’s commentary wasn’t the least bit helpful, and I turned my back towards them, unwilling to suffer Marie’s gaze, which I knew would be filled with judgement.

Fuck, even I was judging myself right now, but I refused to show an inch of weakness - not in font of the Voodoo Clan. Because if they thought for even one moment that I experienced any sort of guilt over what I had done, they would attack. I knew that because if the situations were reversed, it was exactly what I would do.

This was not supposed to happen - not like this. I may not be a murder, but I could swallow what I had done in the name of justice, but now it was no longer a life-for-a-life, a-threat-for-a-threat, because she was pregnant, which meant that I had unknowingly struck against two souls instead of just one.

Why had Isis sanctioned this? I had to cool my rage and anger when she picked up the phone on the second ring.

“How quickly can you get here?”
