Something New - Page 11

“Yup.”

“When’s the big day?” he inquired.

“A few weeks and counting.”

“Wow. You look calm. I would imagine you as someone being pretty erratic right about now.”

“As my wedding planner loves to remind me, I don’t need to worry until there’s something to worry about.”

“Smart thinking.”

“I tell her that multiple times a day, too.”

“How long have you and your dude been together?”

I shifted in my seat at the bar before pausing the recording. “I’m sorry, did we switch roles here? I thought I was supposed to be the one doing the interview.”

“If I have to spend the night telling you about my life, then I should at least get to know some things about you. Ain’t that fair?”

“Fine, whatever. Ask away.”

“How long have you and your dude been together?” he repeated.

“Not long, honestly. We dated casually for a few months, which then snowballed into becoming official, to him proposing all in a matter of months.”

“Mmm.”

“Mmm. Why mmm? You think it’s too fast?”

“I don’t think anything. It’s none of my business,” he said with a shrug.

“Good answer.”

“As long as he treats you right, that’s all that matters, right? Ain’t that the shit people say?”

“Do you not believe in that? You know what, don’t answer that. I get no monogamous vibes from you whatsoever.”

“Well, you’re right. I don’t do relationships. Haven’t in a long time. They’re more trouble than they’re worth, in my opinion.”

“Mmm. Sounds like a man with a broken heart.”

“Call it what you want, but that love shit is overrated.”

“Mmm. I most passionately disagree.”

“I expect you would since you sittin’ over there all in love and shit. Let that nigga break your heart, and you’ll be singing the same tune as me.”

“Don’t wish that shit on me!”

“I’m not. I’m just keepin’ it a buck with you, Isa. Lovin’ somebody doesn’t do nothin’ but hurt you in the end if you’re unfortunate enough to be the last one standing.”

I shook my head. “I’m trying my absolute hardest to see things from your perspective, but I just can’t seem to get my head that far up my ass.”

“Excuse me?”

“When you love someone, and I’m not talking about like. I’m talking about real love. You don’t just stop. Ever. Even when people roll their eyes or look at you like you’re bat shit crazy. Even then! Especially then, right? You can’t just turn it off. And why would you want to? Falling in love is such an amazing feeling. You’d be lucky to feel it.”

"Who cares if you fall in love or don’t. We all fucking burn in the end anyway,” he said cynically.
