Hook (A Hitman's Bait 2) - Page 97

“You have to let me go.” Scott pulled against the ropes around his wrists.

“Like hell I will.”

“Listen to me. What Javier is doing is risky. His family won’t like it at all. In fact, Javi only pursued you for killing Ivan to appease his family. The truth is, we’re both glad the bastard is dead. The longer he keeps Kit there, the more danger they’re both in. It’s my duty to protect him, and I can’t do it from here. Neither can you. Please, you have to let me go if we’re going to save them.”

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because Javier isn’t the piece of shit his brother was. He’s caring and not a violent man unless provoked. You heard him. He protected your boyfriend at the risk of angering his family. He has a cousin who wants to step up and take Javier’s place. This is the opportunity he’s been looking for to label Javier a traitor for keeping Kit alive. They won’t understand he’s only doing it to protect me. You can kill me after if you want. Just let me go so I can protect him.”

How much of what he said could I believe? “What reassurance do I have that if I let you go, you won’t stab me in the back?”

“You don’t have any, but I’ll bet you a thousand times that your boy doesn’t stand a chance if you don’t release me. Let me go, and I’ll convince him to release your boy. Javier’s a man of his word.”

“I have a better idea.” I placed my hands on my hips. “We go rescue them together. How about that?”
