Hook (A Hitman's Bait 2) - Page 73

I smiled. “He would be proud of you now too.”

He shook his head. “I don’t know. He didn’t want me to follow in his footsteps.”

“Sully.”

“Yes?”

“What would you have done if you hadn’t been forced into that contract?”

“Probably be an accountant. Since running the business with Liam, I find I’m quite good with finances.”

“An accountant?”

He raised an eyebrow. “What’s wrong with an accountant?”

“Uh-umm, nothing. Accounting is good. I support you.”

He chuckled. “You think it’s boring, don’t you?”

“Weeeeell, I didn’t want to knock what you love. I’m trying to be supportive.”

“Seriously, though, I’m not sure what I’ll be doing after.”

“Not the private side of the business?”

“I don’t know. It’s not just me anymore, Kit. I have you to think about, and if I want my family to come together, I should find a safer and more practical job.”

“But not accounting.”

“What do you have against accounting?”

“It’s—it’s just that your eyes will be on the computer all day, and then your vision will be ruined, and before you know it, you won’t even be able to look at me and tell me how beautiful I am.”

“Kit, I don’t need my sight to know how beautiful you are.” He tapped my nose. “Your image lives rent-free inside my head.”

I smiled. He had to know I was joking, but he’d answered me all seriously just the same. I liked that.

“Is it a naked image?” I asked.

“I’m not telling.” He took another sip of his wine. He’d drunk three glasses already.

“You’re not driving us home tonight, are you?”

“Nope. Geoff will pick us up when we’re ready.”

“Great.” I closed my eyes, enjoying the melodious tune of the violin.

“Kit?”

“Hmm?” I cracked an eye open.

“The night of the club, I regretted not dancing with you. I’d like to change that, but I can’t. Will you dance with me now?”

“Yes.”

He took my hand and led me out from under the canopy. The view from the rooftop of the city was amazing. The skyscrapers loomed, giant structures adding shape to the night.

Sully placed an arm on my lower back, and together we swayed to the beautiful music. I could never have asked for a better date night.

“This is nice.” I sighed.

“It is. This I can manage, but I don’t think you’d look at me the same again if I did any of that twerking thing you were doing at the club.”

I giggled. “Now I gotta teach you.”

“No, Kit. Absolutely not, so please get that idea out of your head right now.”

But if he knew me at all, he would know that wasn’t possible. The idea had already taken root.
