Hook (A Hitman's Bait 2) - Page 40

After another hour, a door slammed. Kit finally got home. He stepped into the living room—alone—and stopped dead in his tracks, his gaze darting from me to Liam.

“Look who’s home.” Liam surged to his feet. “So what’s the verdict, Kit? Do we have another driver on this team or what?”

I got up as well but didn’t go to him. Instead, I studied him. I missed his sparkle. Kit was extra about most things, and his lack of enthusiasm couldn’t be good news.

“Weeeell, it was hard,” he said. “I was more anxious than I’d ever been before, and it didn’t help the man was incredibly mean.”

“I’ll kill him,” I growled. “I want to know his name and what he looks like.”

Kit chuckled. “No need to. I did it! I got my driver’s license.”

“You did?” Liam squawked.

I rushed past him and pulled Kit into a hug. “I knew you could do it. Didn’t I tell you that?” I kissed him hard. He had overcome his stress about driving and passed his test. “I’m so damn proud of you.”

“It’s not like a college diploma or anything. It’s just a stupid driver’s license.”

“Stupid?” Liam echoed. “This is the ticket to your freedom. Do you know how many girls and boys crawled into the back seat of my car back in high school when I got my license?”

“Nobody’s crawling into the back seat of Kit’s car.”

Kit poked around in his pocket and came up with his license. I stepped back, took it from his fingers, and stared long and hard at it.

Fuck.

“Well, maybe I can entice you in the back seat.” Kit plucked the license from my hand.

“I’m too old for back-seat sex. This pretzel would snap right in half.”

“That’s an image I didn’t need in my head.” Liam tapped his temple. “I can’t get it out. A naked Sullivan folded up like a pretzel. Actually, it’s kind of hot.”

“Pervert.” Kit shoved Liam halfheartedly. “You didn't see what was right under your nose all this time and know what a catch he was. You lost your chance, and I’ll fight you to death over Sully.”

I smiled at Kit’s possessive tone. I kissed his nose. “Put away your claws, kitty. He couldn’t take me away from you, even if he tried.”

“I’ll go change into something more comfortable.” Kit kissed my cheek. “No funny business, Liam.”

“I can’t promise.”

When Kit was out of earshot, Liam’s smile morphed into a scowl. “What a nightmare. They gave Kit a driver’s license. What the hell were they thinking? I’ll say it right now, Sullivan. I don’t care how in love with the guy you are, but I will not now or ever get into a car with Kit behind the wheel.”

“Hmm.”

“What ‘hmm’? I mean it.”

“It’s fake, Liam.” I sat on the couch again and placed the laptop on my lap.

“What’s fake?”

“The driver’s license.”

Liam frowned. “What do you mean it’s fake? I know it’s hard to believe he passed, but he just showed it to us.”

“But you’re forgetting that they don’t give you your license the same day. You get a temporary one until the real license arrives in the mail.”

“The hell, Sully! You’re not going to let him drive around with a fake license. Are you?”

“Of course not.”
