Lure (A Hitman's Bait 1) - Page 133

“Last time I saw her, she was in the laundry hamper.” He took out eggs and a carton of milk. “How about an omelet?”

“Yes, please.”

He poured me some milk to drink while he prepared my breakfast. I was content just to watch him move around the kitchen. Neither of us was skillful in this area, but we made do.

“Did Liam have any update on the Grimaldos?”

He plated the omelet and brought it over to me. “Like we predicted, they’re too busy right now squabbling among themselves about who should take over to be actively concerned with who killed Ivan.”

“But that can’t last forever, right?”

Sully walked around to the back of my chair and kissed the top of my head. “How about a truce? You don’t worry about Grimaldos, and the second I know something that’ll change that, I’ll let you know.”

I tilted my head back. “You promise you won’t keep it from me?”

“I won’t. We’re in this together now, which makes this the right opportunity to tell you I hired you a bodyguard.”

I gaped at him. “You did?”

“Yes, for when I’m away on business.”

The idea of someone by my side all the time sent a shiver down my spine.

“You’re not going to argue about that, are you?”

“I admit it’s strange, but if it makes you feel better when you’re away, I’m willing to put up with it.”

“Yes, say it like it’s a bad thing that I want to keep you safe.”

He kissed my neck, then strolled out of the kitchen.

“Hey, where are you going?” I cut into my omelet. It smelled so good. “Sit with me while I eat.”

“Just grabbing my laptop, needy kitty.”

I was shamelessly needy when it came to him. He returned to the kitchen with his laptop and sat across from me, a cup of that disgusting green juice he made himself before him. I dug into my omelet, contented to be in the same room with him, even though we didn’t speak. Just looking at him, seeing the way he frowned at the screen of his computer, the bobbing of his Adam’s apple when he swallowed, made my world right.

His phone rang, dancing on the island. Then stopped. Sully frowned at the device.

“Aren’t you going to check who it is?”

“In a minute.”

He seemed to be holding his breath. The phone rang again, and he snatched it up.

“I have to take this.”

“Then take it.”

“Hey, it’s me.” The tenderness in his voice caught me by surprise. He walked out of the kitchen with the phone to his ear, and I stared down at my omelet, a heavy feeling in the pit of my stomach. What the hell? Why did he have to take a phone call in private? And he only got that tender tone in his voice when speaking to me.

I was tempted to get up and follow him, but I shoveled the rest of my omelet into my mouth. There had to be a reasonable explanation. He was the one who’d asked me for exclusivity. I might not have known Sully long, but he wouldn’t fool around with anyone else. Not like that.

A few minutes later, he came back, swearing under his breath.

“Something wrong?” I asked.

“Not yet.”
