Lure (A Hitman's Bait 1) - Page 58

“I couldn’t. I was trying to forget about you, about what we did that day.”

“It was amazing. I want to play again with you. I get it if you don’t want anything sexual with me right away because it’s new to you, but there’s no reason you can’t play with me.”

I shook my head. “Don’t you want me to explain what happened tonight before you decide I’m someone you’d want to be with?”

“To be honest, I’m not sure if I want to know.”

“You should know what you’re getting into.”

He sucked in a deep breath, and despite his bravado, fear flickered in his gaze.

“Kit.”

“Yes?”

I showed him my hands. “No matter what happens, these hands could never hurt you.”

“I’m not afraid of you. I’m afraid for you. What you did tonight—it was dangerous.”

I smiled at him. “You never have to worry about me. I’ve had years of practice doing this. There’s a reason I’m the best at what I do.”

“Killing people, you mean.”

“That’s just a part of it. I don’t always kill people. Sometimes I just recover assets.” If only the table weren’t between us, I would have pulled him onto my lap. “Leo Bernard was no saint. In fact, I’m going to tell you a client’s secret that I’ve never done before because I trust you to keep it.”

He nodded. “Go ahead.”

“Liam already explained what interested the man sexually. Most people in his circles are aware of this, but they love his money too much to do anything about it, and if there are parents who make a fuss, he has enough money to keep them quiet. But he went too far when he did it to his own son.”

Kit gasped, covering his mouth with his hand. “That’s horrible.”

“Nobody knew until their son killed himself and left a note behind. His wife found that note, and she’s wanted her son to be avenged ever since.”

“I don’t blame her one bit.”

“Do you blame me for taking the job?”

He shook his head slowly. “No, I don’t.”

“Listen, I’m not going to sit here and pretend I’m a hero doing this vigilante shit to better the world. Kit, that’s not who I am. I’m a bad man who works with some ruthless villains who rule the underbelly of this city.”

“Worse than Bernard?”

“Yes, but in a different way.”

“Can you tell me who?”

“No, it’s better you don’t know. Believe me, if I thought there was any way this could end well for me if I tell you, I would.”

Kit released his legs and stood. He walked around the table and wedged himself into my lap, curling up his legs gracefully, like the felines he adored. He traced a finger along my jawline.

“I think I suspected, but I didn’t want to know,” he said softly.

I wrapped my arms around him and buried my face in his neck. “I didn’t want you to know either, but that was impossible. Eventually, you would’ve found out.”

Kit combed his fingers through my hair. “And what now?”

I raised my head. “That’s entirely up to you.”
