Lure (A Hitman's Bait 1) - Page 42

“You know it can’t be helped. If we let you walk away, we might as well be inviting everyone to take a shot at Don Pinelli. It’s not personal, Mitch. Just a part of the business.”

“A business where you do all the killing?” He chuckled. “You’re nothing more than a lapdog who does Pinelli’s bidding. You can’t say no even if you wanted to. If you think you’re not disposable like the rest of us, the truth will come out soon.”

My hands formed into fists. A phone rang out, pulling my attention from him. Fuck. I hadn’t put it on vibrate. This was the sort of mistake I made when I was thinking about the sad eyes of a certain boy.

“Hold that thought,” I said to Mitch. “We’ll revisit it right after I take this call.”

Liam’s name lit up on my phone. He knew what I had to do tonight, and he never disturbed me unless it was something important. More important than taking the life of the man behind me.

“What is it?”

“Kit’s gone.”

My pulse throbbed at my neck. “What the hell do you mean gone?”

“He was moody today after you left, so I stopped by to cheer him up. He’s not home.”

“He’s free to go wherever he wants.” As long as he lay low and was available when we needed him.

“But what do I make of all the receipts I found in the wastepaper bin? He withdrew a lot of money from the ATM. Why would he need so much money, Sullivan? I’m afraid to think of what he’s getting involved in.”

“Why not…”

I turned to the man behind me, listening to my end of the conversation.

“Why not what?”

“Never mind. I’ll find him.” Apart from the tracker we had made for work purposes, I’d also put one in the pendant of the necklace I’d given him. Liam had no idea about that one, and I had no desire to explain it.

“I’ll find him,” I said.

“We need to. I don’t know how he survived before you found him, but that boy badly needs looking after. You know I wouldn’t have called you if I wasn’t worried about him.”

“You did the right thing. I’m on it now.”

I ended the call and faced Mitch. “Party’s over. We’re going to have to do this quicker than I’d originally planned.”

“Fuck you, Matthews!” he yelled. “I’ll see you in hell, you fucking prick.”
