I Never Knew Love 'til You (I Never 4) - Page 44

Today was a good day. After spending another two hours at the park, we came back to the house, and I convinced Kate to allow me to whip up some burgers on the grill. Andy is now sound asleep upstairs, and there’s some new show on Netflix playing on the TV, but it’s mere background noise. My focus has been on Kate for most of the evening.

“So, today was all about being adventurous,” I admit, breaking the silence.

“Huh, that was adventurous? Remind me not to ask you to go skydiving or bungee jumping.”

“Oh, you think you’re funny, huh?” I tease, cocking my head to the side, amusement dancing in my eyes.

“Yeah, I’d like to think so,” she taunts with a sassy expression on her face. All that’s missing is a finger snap in the air.

I lunge for her and tickle her sides.

Her laughter is the type that’s infectious. When she does it, you can’t help but join in. I’m not sure I’ve smiled as much as I have today.

I pull Kate upright so she is now straddling my thighs. My dick instantly hardens at her closeness. Fuck! This was a bad idea.

“What was it you were saying?” she asks me in a low tone as her hips rock back and forth. I groan and close my eyes, trying to gather composure before I rip these clothes from her and we continue this dance naked.

I grip her hips to keep them from moving. As much as I love the feel of her against me, all the blood is rushing from my head to my cock, and I can’t get one coherent thought in.

Kate pouts when she realizes I’m stronger than her and she can’t tease me anymore.

“Okay, fine. What was it you wanted to say so we can get back to that?”

“Right.” I close my eyes. “Today was all about being adventurous,” I repeat. “But there’s one more thing I want to do.”

She sits back on my knees, putting more space between us.

“You have my attention. What is it that you would like to do, Mr. McAdams?” I swallow thickly, and her eyes dip down, following the bob of my Adam’s apple. The way she says Mr. McAdams reminds me of Marilyn Monroe saying Mr. President.

“Well, I would like to explore this thing.”

She purses her lips together and tilts her head to the side. “I’m going to need you to be more specific.”

I tickle her side again, and she jolts, nearly falling off my lap. Taking advantage of her guard down, I flip her so she is now on her back and I’m hovering over her. “I want to explore this thing with you, Kate.”

She forms an O with her mouth, and oh shit, the things I want to do to that mouth right now. “As much as I enjoy fighting with you, I think I might like kissing you more.”

“Just kissing me?” She pants as my lips trail over her goose-bumped flesh.

“For now.”

I pull back and allow myself to drown in her warm chocolate eyes. There are golden specks in them that captivate me. “Look, I don’t want to beat around the bush, but I need you to know that this is completely unfamiliar territory for me. And I let my guilt for moving on get in the way for quite a while. It was never you—it was always my issues, and I’m sorry if I ever made you feel otherwise. I’ve never dated someone while doing the whole single-parenting thing. So, I might not be very good at this, but I’d like to try.”

She cups my cheek in her palm and runs her thumb over my stubble with a soft smile on her face. “You, Jaxon McAdams, are an amazing dad. And I will go any speed you need. I want to explore this with you, too. Somehow, you and that little boy of yours wiggled your way under my skin, and you’re right, as much as I love bickering and fighting with you, I think I’ll enjoy this more. Maybe all that arguing was just an awkward form of foreplay.” She laughs before I capture her lips with mine.

And that’s how we spend the rest of the evening, kissing and bickering like an actual couple.
