He side-eyed her. “What kind of question is that?”
“I’m just curious,” she said and shrugged. “It seems like something that would happen to you.”
“Connor was protecting Sasha when he was injured, all right?” He nudged her away. Mila’s honesty was not always delightful.
“I’m not talking about him.” She angled toward him. “I’m talking about you.”
“And?” He raised his eyebrows in question.
“And I doubt that’s why you would get shot,” she whispered as her eyes twinkled.
Maddox adjusted his jacket. “I’ll have you know I would have taken a bullet for you. But now I’m not so sure.”
She leaned over and kissed his cheek. “I’m teasing.”
“Yeah, well, you still hurt my feelings.” He turned to face the opposite window.
“I’m sorry,” she said softly in his ear and kissed his cheek again.
“How sorry?” If she was going to be like this, she’d have to face the consequences.
Mila gently drew his face closer and pressed her lips to his softly.
Maddox wrapped his arms around her. If this was how she apologized, he’d get his feelings hurt more often.
