Love and War with the Billionaire - Page 37

He was right. She was a fool.

Maddox sat back down. “I’ll call when I need you.”

Without giving herself a chance to tighten the noose, she marched out. As she headed to her cubicle, her nostrils flared, and her eyes stung simultaneously. What was she doing this for anyway? Did it matter that much if Maddox blabbed about Jackson?

But she knew the answer.

Before she could do something rash like give Maddox another chance to humiliate her, her phone buzzed with a text from Wes asking her to meet them for a small concert that night.

Grateful for a distraction, Mila immediately said yes.

Wes picked her up that night and whistled when she opened the front door. “I’m glad I warned everyone I have a hot date tonight.” Mila rolled her eyes. Wes grinned and led her to his car. “I’ll warn you that this music will not make you feel better. Jett produced it, so I can guarantee it’s depressing.”

Mila blinked as he opened the door for her. “Why are you telling me that now?”

His eyes sparkled. “Because it’s too late to change your mind.”

Mila pursed her lips but hid a smile as she ducked into the seat.

They arrived at the offbeat club on the first floor of an old warehouse, and he took her hand as they walked inside. It was industrial and a little gritty for a bunch of billionaire hotshots, Mila thought, but they found his friends huddled in a corner table near the back. All of them except Jett.

“Where’s Jett?” Mila whispered after they sat down.

“Probably in the back with the band,” Wes told her.

As soon as the concert finally started, Mila’s phone rang. She excused herself and answered as she hurried to the restroom.

“I need you to bring those documents you copied,” Maddox barked without so much as a hello. “Parker thinks you took them home with you.”

“What? No.” Mila could barely hear him and covered her free ear. “I left them on your desk as ordered.”

After a beat, he said, “Where are you?”

“I’m at a concert.” She squeezed against the pedestal sink as someone else came in. “Look, I came with someone else and can’t do anything right now. But the last time I saw them, those papers were on your desk.”

After a pause, he said, “Are you with Wes by any chance?”

Mila shut her eyes. Maddox managed to complicate everything in her life now. “Not that it’s any of your business, but yes.”

She could hear him take a breath. “Fine. But I expect to see those documents on my desk first thing tomorrow.”

Mila stared at her reflection in the mirror as her usually vibrant hazel eyes lost their verve. “Yes, sir.”

He hung up and she lingered to cool off before rejoining the group. Was there another way around this problem? Because she couldn’t see it.

When she got home, she searched for the documents anyway, but she didn’t have them. She was sure she left them on his desk.

She rubbed the bridge of her nose. Maybe tomorrow she could put things in order. Meaning, her entire life. For now, she’d have to wait.
