Trek - Page 15

“You don’t see shit. What you need to see is if anyone has seen anything comin’ in or out of that house she told us about.” Cross chuckles as he shakes his head.

“Prospects are gettin’ a few pictures of the guys who have been in and out. It seems like a hot spot of activity. Too much for a normal house,” he says. It pisses me off that this shit is so close to home.

“I need to go see my mom. Make sure my sisters are good.”

“It’s really botherin’ you, yeah?”

“Yeah, brother. Look at her. She was my fuckin’ neighbor.”

“Heard that. I’ll let you know when the pictures come in.” I nod my head and walk back over to my seat, dropping back down into the chair. After a few minutes, Heidi comes over and sits down next to me. She doesn’t say anything, just sits there when the idea comes to me. Heidi should go with me. I should take her with me to see my mom.

“You up for a little visit?” I ask her.

“Who are we visiting?”

“My mom.”

“I don’t know, Trek. I haven’t seen anyone in a long time,” she tells me.

“I know, but I think it might help to be around someone familiar.”

“My mom is right next door,” she whispers.

“You can go see her too. You’re not stayin’ there, though,” I tell her. Why the hell do I sound so firm on that? I shouldn’t care if she wants to stay with her mom, but I don’t think she’s ready for that yet.

“I’m not staying there?”

“No. You’re stayin’ here until things settle and you’re back on your feet,” I explain. Maybe I’m being a selfish asshole, but I don’t want to let her go just yet, and I don’t think she’s ready either.

“Okay. I’ll go.”

“You will?” I ask, glancing over at her.

“Yeah. I’ll go as long as you don’t leave me,” she adds.

“I’m not leavin’ you darlin’.”
