CHAPTER18

What the hell was he doing? Devyn couldn’t help but wonder as he stood there, holding a stack of files that he wasn’t even sure that she needed and-

He missed her.

God, he was fucking pathetic, Devyn thought even as he raised his fist and knocked on her door. He hadn’t seen her in two days and he was fucking lost without her. He found himself thinking about her when he should be working and reaching for his phone to call her at least a hundred times a day before he realized what he was doing. He just…wondered why she was glaring up at him.

“You bastard,” Andi bit out with the cutest fucking glare before she turned around with a sniffle, clearly dismissing him only to pause, turn right back around and, with a glare that was just too fucking adorable for words, grabbed the stack of files from him with a grumble and stormed off. Lips twitching, Devyn stepped inside and went to close the door when he saw the large man sitting on the couch, smiling hugely as he watched him only to lose that smile, grunt in pain, and turn a glare on Andi when she climbed over him and settled on the other end of the couch.

“You must be Devyn,” the large man that looked a lot like the small woman tearing through the files he’d brought said. “And if my sister wasn’t already lost in whatever the hell you just gave her, she’d remember her manners and introduce us. I’m her brother, Drew.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” Devyn said, throwing the woman grumbling to herself a questioning look only to have her brother fill him in on what was going on.

“She’s mad at you.”

“That much I gathered. Any idea why?” Devyn asked, taking off his jacket and folded it over a kitchen chair before he grabbed his iPad from the pocket as he glanced back at the adorable woman humming softly to herself as she began making notes.

“Because you called me when she was in the hospital, which resulted in hourly check-ins and me being forced to babysit the little pain in the ass to make sure that she was listening to the doctor, but now that you’re here, I think I’m gonna head home and catch a few hours of sleep before my next shift,” Drew said with a satisfied sigh as he got to his feet and headed for the door. “The gash and the bruise are healing quite nicely, but they’re still bothering her. Make sure that she takes her meds, takes it easy, and changes her bandage.”

“Will do,” Devyn said, his gaze never leaving Andi as her brother let himself out.

Once he was gone, Devyn sat down on the couch and watched Andi, still amazed by how quickly her mind worked as she went through the files that he’d brought. He’d never met anyone like her, Devyn thought as he took in the stacks of folders covering the coffee table, end tables, kitchen counters, and nightstands, and had absolutely no doubt in his mind that she’d already torn through each and every one of them.

He considered asking her what she was working on, but he already knew that he’d be wasting his time. She was already lost in whatever she was doing and if he did manage to get her attention, she’d blindly reach over and grab the legal pad that she kept just for him and toss it at him before going back to whatever she was doing. For a moment, Devyn considered taking a look at the notebook on the couch next to her to find out what she was working on, only to decide against it since that would probably end with him feeling like the biggest asshole alive when that bottom lip started trembling and she sadly mumbled, “My notebook.”

He needed to stay focused on what he needed to do to fix this fucking mess. He had less than three months to come up with something to save his ass and no fucking idea how he was going to do that. With that in mind, he swiped open his iPad and went over the notes that they’d made for his final report. For the next few hours, he worked on his report, outlining the damage, the hotels that had been hit, and when he’d finally had enough for one night, he tossed the iPad on the coffee table only to find the small woman who’d been ignoring him all night frowning in confusion.

“Where did Drew go?” Andi asked, placing everything on her lap onto the end table as she got up and stretched.

“He left hours ago,” Drew said, watching as she worried her bottom lip between her teeth as his mind went back to that moment when he’d finally managed to free her and damn near groaned when he remembered just how good it felt to brush his lips against hers. He’d thought about that a lot and just how badly he wanted to do it again.

God, he was losing his fucking mind.

With a grumble, Andi made her way to the bathroom while he sat there, glancing down at his watch only to sigh when he realized just how late it was.

He had to be at work in a few hours. For a moment, he considered going back to the office and crashing on the couch, but that was the last place that he wanted to be right now. That left crashing here, Devyn decided as he stood up and moved everything off the couch before grabbing the pillow and blankets that Andi kept in the closet for him when they worked late and quickly made up the couch while he did his best to ignore the sounds of Andi undressing in the other room, the sounds of the shower turning on, and-
