CHAPTER5

One Week Later…

Maybe she should see if the accounting department had an opening, Andi wondered as she worried her bottom lip between her teeth as she stared down at the reason why she’d rushed back here at ten-thirty at night and couldn’t help but wonder where the rest of the files that were supposed to be on her desk were.

This was bad.

This was very bad, but then again, she already knew that which was why she was standing here panicking instead of back in her bed where she belonged. He was finally going to fire her. There was no longer any doubt in her mind, which in retrospect, might be for the best because she was definitely in over her head on this one.

It probably wouldn’t have been so bad if she’d been allowed to focus on one thing at a time, but apparently, that wasn’t an option. She was supposed to be able to do a hundred different things at once and-

She just couldn’t do it.

She couldn’t focus on what she was supposed to do and listen for the phone and keep an eye on his emails, which had caused more than a few problems this week. Then again, her inability to realize that someone was standing in front of her desk yelling at her had definitely been a cause for concern. She wished that she could say that only happened once, but unfortunately for her, she’d managed to piss off two board members, the VP of marketing, the head of H.R., a mail clerk, two delivery guys, and countless others who hadn’t appreciated being forced to wait because she’d been lost in whatever task that she’d been doing at the moment to acknowledge them.

God, she sucked at this job, Andi thought, biting back a groan as she stood there, trying to figure out why the files were missing, only to once again find herself wondering why Devyn hadn’t fired her yet. Probably because he was so focused on this deal with Hillshire Hotels to notice just how badly she was screwing everything up. That probably wouldn’t be a problem after tonight when he realized that she’d lost the files that he’d told her that he needed for his trip to New York, Andi thought, swallowing hard as she glanced from where she could have sworn that she’d left them, to Devyn’s closed office door and really hoped that he’d taken it upon himself to grab the files before anything bad happened to them.

Praying that she hadn’t left them in the boardroom, Andi quickly made her way to Devyn’s office door only to curse, turn back around, and grab the key from her desk drawer before turning right back around and trying not to panic as she made her way into his office only to sigh with relief when she spotted the large stack of files that she was supposed to go through sitting on top of his desk and-

“I couldn’t take my eyes off you tonight, Devyn.”

-found herself racing across the spacious office and diving beneath the large desk before she realized what she was doing, and once she did, she rolled her eyes and moved to push the chair out of the way, only to grab hold of the chair and pull it back into place with a wince when she heard the six magical words that had her placing her hands over her ears.

“My husband doesn’t need to know.”

“I’m sure that he doesn’t,” Andi heard Devyn murmur absently along with the sounds of their footsteps coming closer while she hid there, unable to help but wonder what he was still doing here, only to bite back a curse when she remembered that the monthly dinner with the board was tonight. Really wishing that she’d remembered that before she’d decided to come back here, Andi prayed that they took this somewhere else, preferably before they did something that would haunt her for the rest of her life. She really couldn’t stress how much she didn’t want to hear her boss having sex.

“Have you ever wondered what it would be like between the two of us? Or just how good it would feel to-” the mystery woman started to ask right around the time that Andi decided that it had been way too long since she’d hummed to herself as the mystery woman decided to ask several questions that Andi really didn’t want to know the answers to.

She didn’t stop humming when she heard the desk chair pulled back a minute later or when she heard what sounded like a heavy sigh because she wasn’t about to risk hearing anything that would scar her for life, not after that time that she’d walked in on her uncle with-

“What the hell are you doing here, Miss Dawson?” came the question that had her squeezing her eyes shut.

“Really hoping that I’m able to block this out one day,” Andi said, praying that he took pity on her and waited until after she left to answer the question about the last time that his cock had been sucked.

“Your secretary is under there?” the woman that really didn’t sound that happy to discover that she was there demanded as Andi corrected her with a muttered, “Assistant.”

“I think it would be a good time for you to return downstairs, Janet,” her boss, who had thankfully declined to answer the previously asked question, drawled. There was a heavy pause, and then Andi heard the angry sounds of stiletto heels hitting the rug, followed by the office door slamming shut.

“Let’s try this again, Miss Dawson. What the hell are you doing under my desk?”

“Trying to pretend that the last five minutes didn’t happen,” Andi said with a solemn nod, really hoping that he wasn’t about to take that as an invitation to reminisce about what just happened as she found herself pulled out from beneath the desk right around the time that she decided that she was actually okay with getting fired.
