The Woodland Packs - Page 96

Wolves, maybe?

I pushed myself to look back at the road before me. I didn’t recognise any of the landmarks and the road was winding.

My heart began to thump harder in my chest.

My stomach twisted until I tasted acid in my throat.

This was bad.

I shouldn’t have left Claire’s house.

They weren’t going to hurt me. I would have been safe.

Sure, Brad was saying crazy, stupid things about me being his mate… or something like that. But they wouldn’t have hurt me. Claire wouldn’t have let them.

And now I was driving in the dark, in bum fuck nowhere. And I was scared.

I pushed my foot down harder on the accelerator and turned the radio on.

Some stupid guy singing a dumb, stupid, love song came on the radio, and even though I’d usually switch it off with an angry flick of my wrist, I didn’t care. I needed the distraction.

My heart thudded against my rib cage harder.

Maybe I should turn back? I was still closer to Claire’s house than home.

I took my foot off the accelerator, preparing to turn back. That’s when I heard it.

The roaring of a bear, charging at my car.

“No!” I screamed out and jumped on the accelerator again. The car burst forward at the same time the bear ploughed into the backseat door on the driver side.

The car spun out of control and I braced myself for the impact. I kept screaming as I was flung around and around.

My breathing was coming in spurts and pants, and I could hear the continued growling.

My car had come to a rest now, and thank the heavens, hadn’t rolled.

My neck was killing me and my shoulders were rigid as I gripped the steering wheel, but there was no blood. No broken bones.

A black bear walked towards the car, visible in the headlights.

Fear flashed through my body as I grappled for the keys.

I needed to get out of here.

Now!

Then a wolf appeared. A big, silver wolf, and I think I passed out, because I only remember flashes of what happened after the car accident.

The vicious noises of an animal fight.

The sinking feeling of knowing I was about to die.

And realising how stupid I was.

How my pride had gotten the better of me again… Nay, my temper.

Someone was carrying me. I should have been scared. Who had me? Where were they taking me?
