His Next Trick - Page 24

“Just remember what I said,” he reminds, smiling down at me.

“About family,” he adds, and I give a squeeze in silent reply, feeling his huge frame relaxing when I lean my head against his arm.

Instantly closer and bonded in a way I never thought possible with anyone.

And all thanks to my newspaper boss.

“I think I might be fired,” I murmur aloud, but Jett only shrugs.

“You’d better be. No girl of mine is gonna do anything she doesn’t really want to.”

I feel my heart flutter at his words.

His girl…

Wow.

“You wanna be an intern and a waitress, I won’t stop you,” he says. “But I think you’re more than that, and I know you do too,” he adds, pecking the top of my head.

Closing the topic before it goes any further is fine by me because as usual, Jett is right.

Again.

This is all gonna take some getting used to, so I may as well start practicing.

Starting right now.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Jett

Do I need a ‘few things’?

Not exactly.

I’ve got everything I need right next to me, but if we go back to the hotel I just know I’ll run into Miles and Co.

The whole ‘where the hell have you been?’ speech, which quite frankly gets boring when it’s my name and talent that pays these people to treat me like a product they sell.

I’ve had the limo take us to a part of town I know I’ll blend in a little better.

Celebrities shop at boutique stores and pay too much because… well, that’s where we all hang out to not get bothered with being a celebrity when we just wanna buy stuff.

I’ve been spotted and spotted names much bigger than mine, and we usually just give each other a knowing look before getting on with what we came for.

Things like food and drinks, hotels and cars. That’s all Miles’ department.

But when I want to buy myself something nice, or in this case, Penelope, I handle things my own way.

Keeping her hand in mine after helping her out of the car, she seems to wilt a little next to me.

“What’s the matter?” I ask, hoping she doesn’t have indigestion or worse from the huge meal we had earlier.

“You sure you wanna be seen with me?” she asks, creasing her mouth at one corner. Her eyes are already on a few passersby who stare.

“I get that a lot,” I explain to her, still confident we won’t be bothered too much.

But she’s not as convinced, and after a few more stares I start to wonder.

Finally, someone blocks our way, a phone in Penelope’s face as some random woman asks me when I was gonna tell the world I had a daughter.

I feel my jaw tighten, and keeping a firm grip on Penelope’s hand I duck into the nearest store with her.

The security is sympathetic to our cause and makes sure the budding filmmaker knows that they’re not coming in.

So much for not causing a scene.

Especially seeing as the store I’ve chosen at random is a bridal boutique, of all the places to rush into.

“Maybe we should just leave… out the back?” Penelope suggests, looking more embarrassed than I think I’ve seen her so far.

The whole thing so far makes me furious on the one hand, when I ask myself what I thought would happen.

Most eligible bachelor for years is suddenly spotted in public with a girl half his age?

“Sorry, Penelope,” I groan under my breath, “I didn’t think this through at all, I figured we’d be—”

“Figured you wouldn’t be ambushed and then branded a pervert for dating a girl half your age?” she sighs, sounding depressed as she slips her hand from mine.

I open my mouth to stop her from talking like that. I don’t feel that way at all. But another part of me, the more experienced part knows she’s right. That little clip whoever the hell they were just shot will be all over the web in minutes.

“Don’t let it get to you,” I coach her. “We’re both gonna get a lot of that if we…” I trail off.

Suddenly wondering if this is the life I want to drag Penelope into.

The life I’ve gotten used to, but at a huge cost to my privacy.

It’s not fair to thrust this on her.

“Wait here,” I tell her firmly, instructing the guard to make sure she stays put. I stride back out onto the sidewalk and spotting the woman with the phone, I take a deep breath.

Focusing my gaze on the woman’s eyes, I tell her calmly but clearly in a low voice that she’s going to delete her little recordings and move along.

I’ve asked people to do crazier things using only my size and the power of suggestion, but I haven’t counted on this woman’s secret weapon.

Her husband.

He’s not a big guy, nothing compared to my height and size. But the fella has a mouth on him, and in seconds he’s broken the suggestive link I created and is recording me using his phone too.
