His Next Trick - Page 16

“Jett Masters is one tough cookie to crack, just ask our lawyers. He’s sued the paper several times and won a fucking fortune each time,” Karlee continues, a brief glance up at her, and I can see a familiar look in her eyes whenever his name is mentioned.

Like I said, Jett Masters isn’t just all about illusions and magic tricks.

From a woman's view? He’s just fine to look at all on his own. No tricks required.

“Re-work it with some more facts about the show and less about his god damned pant bulge or eyes, okay? And no slander or hinting that he’s even a fake,” she adds emphatically.

But I get it.

I nod feverishly and determined to get this finished I make my way to my cubicle to get started.

Damn. If it isn’t that cologne again. What is it? A forever scent that never wears off?

I tell myself I’m imagining things, but freeze when I hear the tell-tale deep voice from across the office.

Damn. That’s him. He’s actually here.

Part of me wants to squeal with delight. A smaller part of me wants to ignore him entirely.

Focus on my work.

Ignore Karlee’s instructions too and theorize about just how simple parlor tricks have been transformed into a multi-million dollar empire…

But it’s useless.

I can feel him getting closer.

Like the hot sun creeping onto a shadow on a summer day.

Much like the bus, the office is mostly empty on a Saturday, with the few staff here running around like maniacs to get things ready for the late edition.

I can even hear Karlee gushing in between Jett’s deep, rich voice before I get up the courage to peep over the edge of my workstation.

Holy crap on a cracker.

It is him, and he looks ten times hotter than he did last night.

Fudge.

My insides are doing the can-can in time with my core quivering, my panties soaked but my mind is still strong or at least trying to be.

Must. Prove. Something…

It’s no use. His eyes are scanning the office as he ignores Karlee, holding up a hand to silence her once our eyes lock.

It’s exactly like last night when he looked out into the darkness of the arena.

That smoldering, dark look burning right through me.

Right down to somewhere inside me that I know has his name on it with a huge ‘reserved’ sign.

Property of Jett Masters.

My heart is thumping against my ribs, pulsing in time with my clit as I stand frozen to the spot.

My nipples feel like they’ll explode if he comes any closer.

His huge body only gets bigger with each long stride, a half-smile on his face.

Not even bothering to say hi or good morning, it’s straight down to what he’s come here for.

“You had someplace else to be last night?” he asks, not even trying to hide his disappointment. I could say hurt, but I’m still not sure if Jett Masters is capable of being affected emotionally by other people.

Or is he?

There’s a definite look of something in his eyes.

“I… My boss…” I stammer. “I had to get the cab home with him, or…”

Jett shakes his head, unconvinced or just not interested.

“I think we should start over,” he finally says after a long pause.

“Dinner. Tonight. And no bosses, no arena shows. No interruptions. Just you and me,” he says, a matter of fact.

I can feel my jaw slacken, my mouth gaping open as my head nods a dozen silent yeses.

He’s not asking me. He’s telling me.

He could tell me to jump out the window and I’m sure I’d have the same reaction.

The same power that has me captivated by him seems to be able to keep everyone else at a distance.

As if the man himself can will certain things to happen… Like magic.

“I do have this article to finish,” I finally manage to stammer.

“And I’ll have to find something to wear,” I add absently, talking more to myself out loud, out of sheer nervousness.

The sound of a chair creaking next to me makes me jump as Jett settles himself into it, and shimmies even closer to me, looking over my shoulder.

“Maybe I could help? With your article,” he says. “Oh! It’s about me. I can definitely help you with that.” He smiles, resting his big hands on his thighs, looking up thoughtfully.

As if he’s already decided what my article should say about him.

I should be able to stay mad or at least be annoyed by his attitude.

Waltzing in here like he owns the place, telling me what I’m gonna be doing, and muscling in on my work.

But there’s something so utterly disarming about him at the same time.

I can’t help but surrender to the one emotion I hope we’re both feeling.

Relief that we’re together again.

CHAPTER NINE

Jett

I start out ignoring the bank of missed calls and texts from Miles as I drive.

But if I’m gonna have any peace and privacy, I’ll need to tell him I’m busy… on vacation until further notice.
