Nothing Special (Nothing Special 1) - Page 100

When everyone had gotten off, including Day since he’d jerked off while watching his live porno; Day told them he was going downstairs to make breakfast, since it was Monday morning and they all still had to go to work. No doubt they’d all walk into the station looking fucked-out and depleted.

Day made eggs Benedict for himself, God, and Johnson, while he made bananas-foster French toast for Ronowski, since he was informed the man was allergic to mustard seeds.

It was a little after seven when they finished breakfast. God and Johnson went in the den, drank their coffee, and watched ESPN while Day and Ronowski went back upstairs. Day loved showing off his model-car kits and his jazz collection. The men bonded with each other for another hour or so before Johnson and Ronowski had to go home and get ready for work, with a promise of hooking up for pool and beers after.

It was amazing that men could do this type of thing with each other and not make it awkward and complicated. Day and God were walking into the station and before they could even get comfortable at their desks the captain was calling them in to his office.

Day passed Ronowski at his desk on his way to the captain’s office and was surprised when the man looked up and winked at them. The man sure had come a long way.

Day and God closed the door behind them and sat in the two chairs in front of their captain’s cluttered desk.

The captain sat down and leveled a hard stare at them. “Well I’m not one to beat around the bush, so with that said; you guys are both being promoted to lieutenant.”

Day and God’s head snapped to each and back to their captain in complete shock.

The captain put his hand up to halt their questions and continued, “This has come directly from the Mayor to the police chief. The higher ups are real proud of the jobs you’ve done out on the streets, and with Hansen being taking down during an election year, it couldn’t have come at a better time.”

“Wait, are you saying this is a political-gain promotion,” God grumbled sitting up straighter.

Day rolled his eyes at God’s quick-to-bark mouth.

“Did I say that wise ass? No. If you think for a damn minute, you’d get it. Yes, it’s a re-election year and the Mayor is recognizing the best we've got and showing that he’s not taking this city’s prime assets for granted. Damn, Godfrey. When I told them I needed two good lieutenants, your names were the first they came up with.” The captain huffed. He yanked open his desk drawer and withdrew two brand-new, shiny-gold badges and slid them across the desk. God and Day took them and immediately replaced their second-grade detective badges.

“You guys might catch a little hate from some other seasoned officers. Some of these men have been here twenty years and are still third-grade. But that’s their own fault. No one can doubt how hard you guys fight out there. I’m proud to call you my lieutenants. The promotion comes with a shitload of new responsibilities while still doing what you guys do best.” The captain finally gave them a slight smile. He narrowed his eyes at them and shook his head in wonder. “In all my thirty-five years on the force, I’ve never run across two characters like you guys. I’m damn proud of you both. You’re coming up on five years in a couple weeks, that’s unheard of. Believe it or not you guys are making history in the APD. Long after you guys are gone everyone will remember you and tell stories of the dynamic duo that was God and Day.”

Day and God stood and hugged each other right there in front of their captain. Day knew what God had overcome in his life and he was beyond happy for his lover. He had his family back. His brother was looking up to him as a confidant and friend, letting God help guide his future. His mom couldn’t get enough of him and was moving closer. They even had an awesome set of friends that Day was sure would soon become invaluable to them. Everything had finally fallen into place.

“I love you, sweetheart. You saved me,” God whispered just for him.

Day hugged him tightly. “I love you too. We saved each other.” Day softly kissed his cheek.

“All right, all right. You guys can thank each other when you’re not in my office,” their captain teased them.

Day and God shook the man’s hand again.

“Let’s introduce you guys.” The captain opened his door without another word and yelled in a voice only a captain can possess, causing everyone to stop what they were doing and face him.

God and Day stood beside each other, all eyes on them, while the captain spoke.
