Corsairs: Kaspar (Corsair Brothers 2) - Page 107

A distant sound warbles in the trees.

My captor freezes, his fingers tearing my hair from its roots as he holds me pinned. The warble happens again, and it sounds…sickly. Like a dying bird of some kind. He pauses, squinting off into the distance.

Something big and blue flies through the air with a howl. The sound is utterly inhuman, a bellow of pure, unadulterated rage.

I scream as my captor falls to the ground, dragging me over with him. I smack against the dirt, then scramble away while the turtle-guy flails on his back. As he does, I see something big and muddy sitting on turtle-guy's chest. A big fist draws back and slams into turtle-guy's face. Once. Twice. Three times in quick succession, and each time, the puncher makes a furious, familiar sound.

It's Kas. Covered in mud and leaves—probably a disguise—he's absolutely beating the ass of my captor. Every furious punch makes a loud smack against the turtle's face, and he recoils each time.

"You…keffing…touch…my…female?" Kas snarls. "I'll kill you!"

The turtle grabs Kas's horns and wrenches sideways, sending my lover flying. I bite back a scream, wondering if it's too late for me to grab that dead guy's arm and beat someone with it.

A moment later, an opalescent flash appears. Sterre leaps over the five-foot tall roots as if they're nonexistent, her gigantic fanged mouth opening and clamping tight around the turtle's neck as he struggles to get onto his feet. She's wearing a broken home-made harness, and she attacks violently, all claws and jaws and savagery.

As if the raging carinoux is nothing, Kas shoves Sterre aside and is back on my attacker in a moment, and this time he's got one of our makeshift blades in his hand. His eyes are wild as he raises it high, aiming for the turtle-guy's face.

I close my eyes the moment the first stab sinks in, shuddering.

Sterre snarls, pushing her way back, and I turn away as Sterre and Kaspar tear the flailing guy apart. There's some wet sounds, and some gurgling, and I'm pretty sure he's dead when those go quiet, but I don't turn around. Normally I'd watch—because fuck that guy—but my pregnancy stomach is feeling pretty queasy. Has been since the arm showed up. I have a feeling if I look over, I'm going to puke.

Kas is here, though. He saved me.

Gloom comes running through the forest, a distraught look on his face. He's wearing some of my clothing, probably so Sterre won't eat him, and it's almost hilarious to see him wearing one of my skirts like a cape and another like a too-small tutu. "What the kef! You didn't stick to the plan, Killer!"

"Kef the plan," Kas says, wiping blood off his face. He gets to his feet, weary, and his face is covered in blood. The guy at his feet is unmoving, a hulk of dead flesh that Sterre keeps grabbing in her jaws and shaking. Kaspar stares at me. "Kef everything. He was hurting Alice. I couldn't let that happen."

He saved me. He had a plan. He was coming for me all along.

I was never alone.

I burst into tears, my arms going around Sterre as she bowls me over with happy licks. I don't even mind that her muzzle is covered in the other guy's blood. Fuck that guy.

And fuck this planet. "You came for me," I sob, reaching a hand toward Kaspar.

"I will always, ALWAYS come for you, Sunshine," Kaspar tells me in a desperate voice. The look on his face is intense, like he's about to lose his shit and is barely holding himself together. I hold my hand out to him since Sterre is giving me a desperate tongue-bath, but he grabs me and hauls me into his arms, tucking me under his chin and holding me close.

I sob against his chest, utterly relieved.

"My Sunshine," he murmurs, stroking my aching scalp while Sterre moves on to licking my arm instead. "You're crying."

"I'm always crying," I tell him. "It's fine. Everything's fine."

"But it was such a good plan," Gloom calls out. "Don't you want to hear about it?"

"No," I say immediately, closing my eyes and breathing in Kas's wonderful scent.

"No," says Kas at the same time. "Give us a moment."

Gloom makes a sound of frustration and stomps away. Good. I bask in Kaspar's presence, listening to his heartbeat. "I love you," I tell him softly. "Don't ever leave me."

"Never," he promises. "Never, ever, Sunshine. You're stuck with me."

God, I hope so.

KASPAR

Alice is incoherent as she weeps against my chest. "I'm fine," she promises me, blubbering all the while. "Really. I'm fine."

"Clearly." I press a kiss to the top of her head, watching as Gloom tries to figure out how to call Sterre off of the dead gladiator. The carinoux is merrily ripping him apart, limb by limb, as if she won't be satisfied until he's in a dozen pieces. I know how she feels. Part of me wants to do the same, but I can't seem to let go of Alice. I hold her tightly against my chest—so tight I sometimes worry I'm going to smother her—and yet I can't let go.
