Corsairs: Kaspar (Corsair Brothers 2) - Page 61

"You're the best," she tells me, her words muffled against my chest.

"Yeah, I'm pretty great," I agree.

Her small fist smacks into my gut. "The greatest at talking yourself up, that is."

I just laugh. Prickly Alice makes me feel ten times better than terrified Alice. "Well, sure. I have to be my own biggest fan. I can't leave that to my brothers. They're too distractible."

"They're also our rescue team." She sighs and then pats my back. "Okay. You swear you're going up just long enough to check shit out? And then you'll come back down here?"

"Absolutely. I wouldn't leave your side." And I wouldn't. It's keffing bugging me to leave her behind right now, even though logic says that a terrified person clinging to me as I try to climb a sheer surface is not the smartest idea. "I'll come back, because we're going to have to finish what we started."

"Finish what we started?" she asks blankly, frowning up at me. Then, realization hits her and she smacks my stomach. "Good lord, is sex all you ever think about?"

"Not at all. But it is my favorite topic." And it's as good a reason as any to return. I won't leave Alice behind, because I'm obsessed with her. I'm in love with her. I want to protect her always. So no, I'm not leaving her side for longer than necessary. Let her think that I'm letting my dick decide everything. She'll believe that more than she'll believe that she's mine and I'm hers and we're meant to be together.

Forever.

I give her a cocky smile as she marches away a few feet and sits on a spot near a fern, tucking her legs under her behind. Sterre immediately thumps down next to her and lolls on the ground, clearly looking for more attention. Yeah, the carinoux isn't leaving her side. Alice scratches at the big protector-kin's head, giving me another worried look.

"Hurry back," she tells me.

Nothing on this planet can keep me from her side. I just wink.

ALICE

I watch Kaspar as he climbs the redwood-like tree. He makes it look easy, of course. I don't know how he manages to stay in such good shape considering that he's in a spaceship all the time, but maybe all that dopamine racing through his system from the risk-taking helps him stay in shape. Who knows? All I know is that it's giving me quite the view of his tight ass and broad back as he digs his fingers into the bark and climbs higher, his toes braced against the tree.

It takes him no time at all to go what must be a hundred feet into the air, and then he's hauling himself onto one of the spread branches of the tree's open “palm” that cradles the ship. He pauses and grins down at me, obviously proud of himself. I can't help but laugh at his confident expression. "Be careful," I call back up to him. "Don't make me come after you."

He throws his head back and laughs in sheer delight, and my heart squeezes. Damn him for being such a charming daredevil and making me fall for him. Now that he's up near the ship, I can't look away. I cross my arms and watch, anxious, as he sticks his head inside the open door and looks around. A moment later, his entire body disappears inside, and then I'm left wondering what's happening as I stare at the door. Is it abandoned? Is he safe? Did he fall through a rotted floor and I'm going to have to go up after him?

I fret, staring up at the abandoned craft—which really does look like a flying saucer—and waiting for a sign from him. Sterre must sense my mood. She rubs against my legs over and over again, trying to distract me. When she makes an indignant growly sound in her voice, I finally give her some attention, crouching and rubbing my hands all over her. "Fine, fine, I'll pet you."

Sterre just twitches her tail in my face as if to say “finally” and leans fully against me.

The weight of her is so heavy that she pushes me to the ground, and then I'm lying sprawled in the mud with a huge, affectionate carinoux over my chest. I giggle, because we must look absolutely ridiculous, but Sterre is in such a good mood and acting so very kittenish as I scratch a spot on her back that I can't stop laughing. We wriggle around on the forest floor, lost in a petting session, and I love the happy little grunts she makes when I pay attention to her favorite spot on her flank.

Something thumps to the ground nearby. Something heavy.

The sound is so startling that I scream and jerk, trying to get to my feet. Sterre is immediately on attack, flinging herself off of me and pouncing. It takes me a moment to realize that the “thing” Sterre is attacking is a coil of rope-like cords dropped from high above, and we're not being jumped.
